The so called DOG problem isnt an animal problem, its a failure of our own urban imagination.
I have been reading the ORFs latest piece on Deep Ecology, and its a massive wake up call for how we treat our community dogs. For too long, we have been stuck in this toxic, zero-sum mindset: Humans vs. Dogs. But as the research shows, this is a false choice.
Our street dogs arent just STRAYS, they are more than human citizens who have shared our history for centuries. When we push for forceful removal or relocation, we arent just being cruel but we are being ecologically imprudent.
We disrupt the balance of our neighborhoods and ignore the fact that these dogs are our ancient guardians.
True urban resilience doesnt come from building higher walls or more cages. It comes from trans-species spatial justice:
1. Science-led ABC & vaccination
2. Designated feeding zones that reduce friction
3. Governance rooted in compassion, not nuisance control.
India has a deep civilizational heritage of non dualism and empathy for all life. Its time our policies reflected that. We need cities that have room for everyone, the voiceless and the voteless included.
Lets stop fighting each other and start fixing the system. Compassion isnt a weakness; its the only way forward.
