The Church Times Train-A-Priest (TAP) Fund appeal has been open just over a week now. Already, generous readers have contributed £10,570.82. (This is in addition to a legacy, which added almost £80,000 to the kitty last year.) 2/ The places where we worship matter because they provide the threads which bind us to our neighbours and friends and forebears and all the generations to come. They matter because they reflect the love & prayer, hopes & fears of generations.

(The C of E is not unique in this but it is its aping of how other, broken institutions, businesses and bodies choose their leaders and the valuing of the same dead principles which have got us into this mess. We’re called to be different!)

Increasingly clear that episcopal leadership in the Church of England is in meltdown and that the Bench is too weak, faithless and corrupt to do anything. CNCs aren’t working, the ‘senior leadership’ system isn’t working, the culture is moribund. The people of God deserve better.

I am totally with @_F_B_G_ here. The reformation of the episcopacy is now an urgent & necessary step needed to rebuild any trust in our common life @churchofengland Just this morning I was contacted by person who made a safeguarding complaint to @dioceseoflondon about a priest who many of us know to have multiple victims. They were told by Martin Goodwin the Head of Safeharding - who @ArchbishopSarah saw has the person who transformed the safeguarding team in our diocese into a light for the church at large - that they were the only victim & that it was the priest’s word against theirs, even though he will have known those words to be lies…. The question here is of course how much Sarah Muallally knew as the Bishop do London….and then what did about it. That same questions arises in relation to Sarah, @CottrellStephen & the NST of the CofE in relation to the shocking allegations against Stephen Conway. When were they informed? What did they do about? Why have the police acted first? These questions are important to victims, survivors & to those of us who advocate for them. They are also becoming more important for the general clergy & laity of many parishes up & down the entire Church of England. Many of us now feel incredibly badly served by our unelected, unaccountable and not at all got riddable of senior leaders, who appoint one another, protect one another and pay little attention to the teaching of Jesus Christ in relation to power, privilege & position.

An important observation: I know from several examples that the CofE can be capricious: some folk get protected others are relentlessly pursued on similar or minimal evidence. It’s still very much an in house operation.
MartynPercy@MartynPercy

@Stephenmevans1 All other clergy would have been suspended immediately. But bishops get the feathered luxury of three weeks of NST inaction. Until the complainant calls the police. Only then does the CofE act.

@MartynPercy @Stephenmevans1 I think all complaints about sexual abuse by clergy, especially senior bishops like Bishops should be made to the police and not diocesan safeguarding authorities. The evidence is the church covers up all the time.

Remember: 45% of all Grade 1 Listed Buildings are churches. They are repaired by the hard work and effort of their local communities and worshippers. For decades the government has ensured that repairs do not carry a 20% VAT surcharge. Not Labour. A betrayal of our heritage.

I thought this figure for clergy dispossession might be higher, but then remembered that most reductions in stipendiary posts seem to be done by not replacing clergy who leave/retire

The end of the Listed Places of Worship Grant Scheme is devastating for UK churches. Claire Walker, our Chief Executive, will be live on @BBCRadio4 at 5:20pm today to share how forcing listed churches to pay VAT on their repairs will lead to more churches falling into disrepair.

Like @Jacob_Rees_Mogg, lots of people ask me how the Church of England can legally spend £100 million on slavery reparations when that money was given for parish churches. The answer is: they can't. It's not just historically illiterate and morally wrong; it’s illegal.
