A $1 billion for a Ballroom, $10 billion for vanity projects in DC, $15 million for an arch in front of Arlington Cemetery veterans oppose. Meanwhile—they are proposing to cut over $1 billion in tribal programs, eviscerating tribal housing, education, water and other basic programs, while opening sacred sites like Chaco Canyon. How can they defend this? They can’t. Because, it’s indefensible.

Enough is enough. Pass the SAVE Act. New Mexico House Republican leadership just sent this letter to Senate Majority Leader John Thune urging immediate passage of the SAVE Act and demanding a standing filibuster if Senate Democrats try to block it. The American people overwhelmingly support proof of citizenship requirements and basic election safeguards. Yet Democrats continue fighting to block them. We already saw it happen in New Mexico. House Republicans pushed a state level version of the SAVE Act to strengthen election security and transparency. Democrats killed it. No more excuses. No more games. The future of New Mexico and our country depends on Americans having trust in our elections. Bring the bill to the floor and make every Senator defend their position publicly. Right now, far too many families are living with the fear and pain of gun violence. Donald Trump’s DOJ is suing New Mexico because our state chose to protect families instead of helping ICE tear communities apart. The state is the first line of defense against the Trump administration. We can’t let the federal government intimidate us or exert their will on New Mexico. Last week, SCOTUS gutted the Voting Rights Act, attempting to take this country back decades. In the ensuing week, states across the South have raced to redraw maps and wipe out districts representing the promise of the civil rights movement. Today, Virginia’s courts directly undermined the will of the people, who voted for the ballot measure to determine their own future. Make no mistake, this is the fight of our generation—but the fight is bigger than one state or one ruling. We know there are difficult days ahead, but we won’t back down!

We know there are difficult days ahead—but we must continue to keep showing up as generations have before. Especially, in the wake of this week’s Voting Rights decision. Last year I had the opportunity to meet and hear the stories of those who marched in the Children’s Crusade in Birmingham in 1963– who had faced dogs, and fire hoses, and jail cells—but who helped changed the course of history and ultimately helped to pass that very same Voting Rights Act. Their stories hold an important lesson for us on courage and continuing to show up even when the road ahead is hard. We will get through this and we will prevail.
