@heymrsbond @MelanatedSamus Punishment will only teach this kid to keep his disturbing thoughts to himself or do a better job hiding them. He needs natural consequences (the alternative school or something else appropriate to keep others safe) and mental health help.

@preacherwife_ @melodymlyons I allow my teens to be alone in the room with their doctor if the teen is ok with it. I join them after they have a chance to talk to my teen alone. While I know abuse can happen, imo, it needs to be balanced with the need for teens to have privacy with their medical team.

@melodymlyons Well, tbh they do that so that kids can be honest if they are safe or being abused. I worked in pedi and several cases where girls were and 1 was pregnant at 12…by her 18yr brother.

Parents who are scheduling back-to-school physicals for your kids… Don’t leave your kids alone with the doctor. If they shame you, find a different practice. I was 16. My parents were right outside the door. I was confused and embarrassed and never told.

@heymrsbond This is amazing. I’m sharing with my teens since I feel like I need to coach them continuously about this. Esp the last step.

@bexone @daniela127 Not based on my experience, but what I have since studied about how our brains learn to read, I’m confident that only a small majority learn to read by following along with a chapter book.

@bexone @daniela127 Yes, some kids learn that way. Many kids learn very easily and I love that for them. But if you look at our national reading scores, that isn’t the majority of kids.

@bexone @daniela127 He had an IEP but not a specific diagnosis until I paid for testing. And no useful supports. If I knew then what I know now. I was just told to read to him more and he was told not to be lazy.

@bexone @daniela127 I’d need some evidence for that. With my dyslexic child, he just memorized the story. He was a great fake reader. Even my non dyslexic kid didn’t pick up much from watching me read a book, although he learned to read quickly at school

@krk73 @Patefor8 @NYC_stateofmind Schools should alert a parent when a child is struggling in any area. And then be able to point parents to resources (more than Kumon) as well as consider having the school conduct a formal evaluation.

@Patefor8 @NYC_stateofmind If a child cannot read by the time they are through **kindergarten**, the first formal year of school, do you believe their school or teachers at their school should be blamed and shamed?

@bexone @daniela127 Reading to kids and modeling reading is great. But neither teaches a child to read. Just like listening to music doesn’t teach you to read music.

@daniela127 @Theophilus_TP If either you or your husband have any family history of dyslexia, I strongly recommend a full neuropsychological evaluation. Otherwise, I just recommend it. Don’t wait. Time isn’t your friend.

@Schmidt18Pam @daniela127 Well that’s awful!!!! Had no idea. I just remember a really lonely battle in which I was & anyone who pushed 2 open schools labelled a racist or person intent on killing teachers.

As we all know, unless you disavow every single thing every single far right group has ever said or done, you are now also far right in the minds of progressives. Sorry. Amanda doesn't make the rules. She just follows them. Blindly.

@katiewr31413491 @daniela127 Yup. Moms for Liberty, among others, were right. But quoting Hitler “by accident” and some of their other actions makes their advocacy for anything now counter productive.

@Schmidt18Pam @daniela127 Pam, not sure if you heard but both Jenna&Nicolle(PST) moved their older kids to private this year. After, years of denouncing charter schools, school choice for under served kids, “privatizers” and fighting to keep schools closed until there was a moratorium on charters.

@DrSuneelDhand This is a ridiculous statement. Every doctor I’ve been to is thrilled to have patients doing their best to take care of their health. Doctors are not the enemy.

I’m a Physician and let me tell you an insider secret. A lot of the Medical Establishment is TERRIFIED of people who are healthy, well-informed, take great care of their own bodies, and very hesitant to take any drugs. PLEASE be that person.

@InformedMama209 If you had a child with significant mental health problems, you’d realize what a non issue this is. The struggle is getting a child to agree to enter & stay in these programs. In California, children can leave residential programs without parental consent.

There’s currently a bill in California, #A665 that will emancipate all 12-year-olds regardless of demographic, and allow them to make the decision to leave their home, enter into a group home and become ward of the state. It passed quickly and easily through assembly and is now on its way to the senate judiciary committee. You could send your child to school, they can decide to leave your home and mental health professionals can facilitate their move without your consent or access because 12-year-olds have medical privacy. We hope you join us for the hearing at 1:30 located at 10:21 O Street sacramento second floor room 2100.
