My Dad tried helping me with division in 4th grade and neither of us could figure it out. He showed me long division and I instantly got it. I showed my work and he said if I got in trouble he would talk to the teacher. Thankfully, my teacher understood that the new way was stupid and was just what they were required to teach. Small public school at the time.

I have a conspiracy theory. Coworker- “My daughter brought home her simple long division. I was about to help her with it, but she started drawing boxes and I have no idea what that is. I’m about to write a letter to the teacher.” I think they drastically switched up how math is done nationally because they don’t want parents to be able to help their kids. I think it’s intentional. 1) Breaks down communication between families. 2) Breaks away at the foundation of the parent in that the kids think the parents are dumb. 3) Or, it makes the kids think they themselves are dumb. 4) Math isn’t learned, or at least, not well learned. What do you think?

@AppWoodHome Audiobooks as a family. We did the Hobbit while doing a road trip through Scotland. We did The Fellowship of the Rings on a road trip to Florida and back. The kids were 3 and 6 at the time. It is not hard you just have to have the right book and reader.

We NEVER use screens in the car. We’ve done it one time ever because we had a three hour car trip and the kid was barfing. It kept her distracted and less barfy (wasn’t car sickness related and we were on the interstate)
