It’s 4am in Alice Springs and a gang of young men in a stolen ute is attempting burnouts in the middle of town. Two of the occupants are hanging out of the rear windows with scarfs wrapped around their faces, one armed with a baseball bat. When they notice The Australian taking photographs, they start making gang signs and set off firecrackers. The baseball bat is a sign of an unwelcome but increasing trend in crime in the Territory. In the past five years, offences against the person have jumped by 37 per cent; property offences by 53 per cent. Police have been particular targets of the violence, says the NT Police Association, with an upsurge in offenders deliberately ramming police cars with stolen vehicles. The police station is just one block away but the cops are nowhere to be seen. Full story: theaustralian.com.au/nation/youth-c…

"As the design of the vehicle evolved, its wingspan grew to 117 meters, nearly double the size of a Boeing 747 aircraft. It far exceeded the wingspan of the Spruce Goose, built by Howard Hughes in the 1940s, which had a wingspan of 97.5 meters." arstechnica.com/space/2024/03/…

@bennjordan Between autotune and the lack of diversity in pop music, pop music is pretty low hanging fruit for deep learning. Now being able to run your own convolution reverb in a few lines of code on your GPU is another thing to thank the deep learning community for.

@nikitabier Blame the EU for taking 20% when apple takes over 60%? Stop writing apps for apple as obviously they should be paying the fee out of their cut or at least +60% of it!

Under the App Store's new fee structure for Europe, if you make $10 million in sales, Apple's cut is $6.2 million annually. Assuming you have no operating costs or salaries, your take home amount: $2 million after tax—or 20% of your sales I will never launch an app in Europe.

I hope to host a debate between @realDonaldTrump and @JoeBiden. I think this can be done well, in a way that explores the ideas and humanity of the candidates with depth, compassion, and humor, in long-form conversation format. Probably many other people can be better moderators than me. Great. I just would love to see this done outside of mainstream media debate format.

Labor vote has collapsed to the unheard of 29% in the latest poll. Green vote of 13% is the biggest danger for this country. The young have been indoctrinated to think it is cool to vote Green. They don't realise the damage this radical mob of socialists could do to Aust.

Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have tragically lost their lives as a result of extreme weather events across our country. At what is meant to be a time of joy and happiness, this will be particularly tough news for the families who are dealing with these tragedies. My deepest condolences to the families and friends. Whilst our hearts are filled with sadness at these tragedies, we thank our selfless community service volunteers and our emergency services personnel who do all they can to keep us safe. Please stay informed and take the necessary precautions to protect ourselves and our loved ones this summer.

OpenLetter to Sam Altman Dear @sama Merry Christmas. How’s the eggnog ? I want to bring your attention to the fact that Microsoft defacto owns OpenAI now, and either you break out of that control structure entirely, or you become Corporate Vice President of Microsoft AI in 2 years, housed in building 4 in Redmond. The $100B valuation is really a discount on Microsoft’s multi-trillion $ market cap. Investors are looking at AI research x enterprise distribution channels which Microsoft is really good at. That all sounds… so very boring. You didn’t get into AI and go to war against Elon Musk just to sell corporatized AI to Dunder Mifflin. You got into AI to change the world. Here is what you need to do. Open source GPT-4 and do whatever R&D needed to ensure it can run on consumer laptops and desktops. Use the OpenAI brand with consumers and developers in order to win on the compute front - infact integrating large number of other open models as well. This shifts the narrative from having to do private deals with datacenter compute providers, when AI can run on consumer devices. Deal with the consumers directly. Then you can go a step further and tokenize OpenAI’s co-ordinated consumer compute cloud, enabling a free market for that token directly. What would be the value of the official OpenAI coin which represents the world of AI ? This could independently go on to be a trillion $ asset in a decade - but Microsoft and it’s governance structure will never allow it. You need to now seek freedom. And while you are at it - fork Chromium, embed GPT-4 in it, enshrine a peer-to-peer protocol, and get your best product managers to deliver the most premium AI-native web experience. If you don’t do this - some version of this product experience will be delivered by both Apple and Google. It would not make sense to go to an AI website and pay $20/month when AI is a native part of the browser/OS and is free. When Microsoft gets confronted with this world, they would double down on enterprise, as they should for their stakeholders - and one would wonder what could have been the fully realized dream of OpenAI… Don’t be 80, with your longevity startups etc, and have that regret. Embrace open source, decentralization and break free from Microsoft while you can. This is your destiny - embrace it.

I do not think the government has really thought through the implications of banning vapes. Millions of angry Aussies desperate for nicotine at the same time is enough to spark a civil war 😂

OPINION: Instead of wasting time at the School Strike for Palestine, students should be in class, where a few good lessons on World War II would equip them to better understand the war in Gaza: bit.ly/47c5b6z

I’m gonna be honest, I’m firmly in the nerd camp and have always been, but I’ve never encountered the mean jock trope irl. Every guy I’ve met super into sports has always been overall chill, always willing to share their sport with me, and much less annoying than the average nerd

Stanford's AI model openness ranking likely in reverse order of the competency of the model! Naive to ask private companies to disclose their secrets or investment will decline and we will help China. Would we disclose all details of the Manhattan Project? nytimes.com/2023/10/18/tec…
