@AmazonHelp Had a minor problem with filling in the details for a return (basically I couldn't choose an appropriate option or describe my reason for return) so tried to leave feedback about my return. Guess what? I couldn't choose an appropriate option or describe my problem.

@OliverKamm @DAaronovitch I think there's a grain of truth in the claim that English has inherent qualities of greater expressiveness, but this is a reflection of its mongrel character rather than its "British" character, and had bugger all to do with its adoption as a lingua franca.

@Schroedinger99 @OliverKamm It's interesting you parse 'very full' as 'almost full'. I think I'd see it as meaning 'more than full' with full meaning satisfactorily replete not absolutely stuffed to the limit 😄

I know all these ghastly phrases have become normal as English evolves but “very complete” is very ugly. Complete, almost complete : fine. But “very complete” when something is not complete at all bothers me. I’m probably tired! Goodnight.

@PubyWax @OliverKamm Yeah. I think I agree with Oliver LK that there is nothing grammatically (or otherwise) "wrong" with "very complete", but I agree with you that it's an abomination that should rarely (if ever) used by anyone aiming for clarity.

@Schroedinger99 @OliverKamm True. The difference to 'I'm very finished' couldn't be clearer. In the end I suppose, like most things linguistic, there's no deep structure, just usage habits.

@PubyWax @OliverKamm @krishgm Well yes. The difference occurs because the adjectives are unlimited in the case of adjectives like "fast" (pace Einstein :-) or limited in the case of adjectives like "full", "empty", "complete" etc. But nobody would object to "very full" - meaning ~"almost full" (cf "overfull")

@Schroedinger99 @OliverKamm @krishgm Neither of these means "almost". Both are intensifiers indicating the quality is present to a particularly high degree (speed, emptiness, respectively). In the absence of the quality, i.e. when it has "almost" been achieved, "very" is odd or inappropriate.

@MikeTappTweets Appalling! Yes, getting a passport *may* "only" take 9 days or 4 weeks, but either is a long time to be stuck abroad trying to find a British consulate who will do this; and passports *may* take much longer. If you first need to register a child born abroad, you are really stuck.

Today I spoke in Parliament about the thoroughly planned communications we have been delivering for dual nationals impacted by new border measures, the speed of acquiring a passport and transitional arrangements in place.

For a country to survive, there has to be a common culture. Nobody dies to defend a “multicultural economic zone”! American culture, with its English-Scotts-Irish origin, is great and worth fighting for. Some may not realize it, but that’s why people come here. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Important segment starting at 25 : 39 in Tucker’s video on who is a “Heritage American”, a now necessary term. A young Anthony Scalia, future Supreme Court justice, upholding Anglo-American law, consciously bristled at his ethnic and religious distinction from the WASPs whom foreign professors assigned a foundational status. But then he went to England and saw it and felt it;

Alistair and Rory (the 'grown-ups') sanctimoniously assert - based on a handful of Epstein emails - that half of men are sexist pigs, which is why metoo and woke must come back. When sacred progressive shibboleths are in play, science and logic go out the window.
