A USN Sailor stands silent after placing his fellow buddy and shipmate next to dozens of other Sailors and Marines killed onboard the US aircraft carrier USS Bunker Hill (CV 17). He was seen carefully button and straighten his buddy's uniform before walking away shedding a small tear. Other Sailors can be seen saying their final goodbyes to their fallen friends.
The USS Bunker Hill were struck by two fully fueled and armed Japanese kamikaze aircraft causing massive fires and multiple explosions while the carrier were supporting operations of the island of Okinawa. 346 Sailors and Marines killed, another 46 listed as Missing In Action Presumed Killed.
Caution: Pictures displays US casualities.

@reardencode @mraustin @scottiebateman Torque, not thrust, and no the low pitch stop will not retract without touch down switch.
English

@mraustin @scottiebateman Some military types explicitly allow reverse thrust while airborne for tactical descents.

@NavalInstitute Would this be the first carrier named after an enlisted man?

@blockhead4000 @shortmagsmle We had a joke in one of my platoons where we had two black guys. The joke was somewhere out there a line platoon was missing their one black guy. Everyone in combat arms is white or Hispanic. Everyone cooking food or some stupid admin job is a woman or black.

I want to be really careful with my words here.

@nonsowtf So what was the motivation for picking him? I'm sure there were some other folks in that community that the White power structure wanted dead, why not pick a local leader? Why some pointless kid? They could only see the murders as an oppurtunity.

For decades, nobody talked about it much. The case sat in history, quiet and buried.
But the questions never really went away. No physical evidence. No real defence. A confession that existed only in the mouths of the officers who took it.
Seventy years later, in 2014, a judge finally looked at it properly.
Judge Carmen Mullen overturned the conviction. The court said George never had a fair trial. That his rights had been violated from the moment they put him in that room alone.
George Stinney Jr. is buried at Calvary Baptist Church Cemetery in South Carolina.
He was a child who never got to grow up. Never got a real lawyer. Never got a fair trial. Never got a single adult in his corner when it mattered most.
And the system that d1d th@t to him did not hesitate for even a moment.

They arrested George the same day. No parents in the room. No lawyer present. Just a 14-year-old boy alone with officers who later claimed he confessed. There was no written confession. No recording. Nothing.
His family started getting thr3ats from white residents almost immediately. They were forced to leave town just to stay safe. George was moved to a jail 50 miles away. Alone. No visits. No family.
The trial came quickly.
His court-appointed lawyer called no witnesses. Did almost no cross-examination. Put up barely any defence at all. The whole thing was over in about two hours.
The jury was a11 wh1te.
They deliberated for ten minutes.
Guilty.
The judge sentenced a 14-year-old boy to the 3lectric cha1r.
George waited in that jail for weeks. Alone. Scared. A child waiting to d1e.
On June 16, 1944, they brought him into the 3xecution chamber. The electric chair was built for a full-grown adult. George weighed 95 pounds. He was five feet tall. They had to place something under him just so the straps could reach.
The mask they put over his face did not fit.
When they turned on the electricity, witnesses watched the mask slide off.
He was 14 years old.
