Why I post as myself
When I set up an X account after Elon purchased Twitter, I paused and gave some thought to my handle. Should I use an alias? Should I use my own name? How exposed should I be?
I ultimately decided to use my own name. I felt like I had things to say, but also wanted to be sure to use this service in a responsible way.
Too many people use the relative anonymity of social media to say things they would never say to someone face to face. Awareness that what I say could be traced back to me would, I knew, give me pause before I hit send, because the recipient of the message would know my name.
On more than one occasion, this awareness has led me to not send a message, saving a potential victim from a barb that would have surely been devastating!
Three years in, I feel confident I made the right decision for me. This service is engaging and interesting. I’ve built several new relationships, and reconnected with old friends. Many times, when I reply to a given post, the only thing I care about is that the person who posted the message sees it and hopefully smiles as a result (if only on the inside).
I check the engagement from time to time, and it’s slowly trending upwards and if the numbers ever get to the point where I can get some income from this system, then that would be gravy. The meat of the matter for me will always be to engage with people one on one, in a slightly public way.
