The father of six-year-old Monica Sathege, who died after allegedly consuming snacks bought from a local spaza shop in Naledi, Soweto, in October 2024, says he is relying on the South African Police Service to bring closure to the family. Joseph Sathege was reacting to a damning report by the Public Protector, which found that Gauteng municipalities had failed to implement adequate control measures to enforce food safety and hygiene regulations at spaza shops. ActionSA Slams Gauteng Health for Spending Over R612 Million on Foreign Medical Staff While Thousands of South African Doctors Remain Jobless ActionSA has criticised the Gauteng Department of Health after a written reply by Gauteng Health and Wellness MEC Faith Mazibuko revealed the department has budgeted R612,719,892 for the salaries of foreign national healthcare professionals during the 2026/2027 financial year. The party says the spending comes while hundreds of qualified South African doctors and nurses remain unemployed despite ongoing staff shortages. According to ActionSA Gauteng Health and Wellness spokesperson Emma More MPL, the department currently employs 551 foreign nationals, including 170 permanent and 186 temporary employees. Of those, 545 work in medical positions such as specialists, doctors, nurses and clinical technicians, while six occupy administrative support roles. The department also allocated R617,622,852 in 2025/2026 and R616,309,957 in 2024/2025 for foreign employees' compensation. More said the spending contradicts claims that budget constraints prevent the employment of local healthcare professionals. She cited South African Medical Association Trade Union data indicating that about 1,480 of nearly 1,900 doctors who completed community service at the end of last year remained unemployed in early 2026. She argued that taxpayers fund medical training, yet many graduates are not absorbed into the public healthcare system. ActionSA said it will request a phased plan showing how permanent positions occupied by foreign nationals will be prioritised for qualified South African doctors and nurses as contracts expire. The party also plans to seek an audit of all 551 foreign employee files through the Portfolio Committee and engage the Gauteng Provincial Treasury to review the R612 million compensation allocation and fund more local medical officer posts.

She asked a legitimate question. A South African minister publicly labelled Nigerians as drug dealers, and a Nigerian journalist asked for accountability. Instead of answering, suddenly the question was “disrespectful” and she was threatened with being kicked out. At this point, I genuinely believe some South Africans are simply intimidated by Nigerians. The hostility is becoming irrational. You cannot publicly stereotype an entire nationality and then become offended when a Nigerian has the audacity to question you. She asked a question. If the statement was defensible, defend it. Threats and intimidation are not answers.

The United States has placed 124 Nigerians on a deportation list, describing them as part of its “worst-of-the-worst” criminal offenders targeted under President Donald Trump’s intensified immigration crackdown. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said the individuals have been identified by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for removal, although it did not disclose when the deportations would begin or the specific offences committed. According to the DHS, the action forms part of the Trump administration’s mass deportation programme, which prioritises undocumented migrants convicted of serious crimes. The agency said the names and photographs of those listed have been made public, insisting the operation fulfils the President’s campaign promise to remove criminal non-citizens from the United States. The latest move comes amid a broader immigration crackdown launched after Trump returned to office in January 2025. Since then, the administration has declared illegal immigration a national emergency, expanded deportation operations across several regions, and tightened restrictions on countries including Nigeria, which was recently subjected to partial US visa restrictions over concerns relating to identity management, information sharing, visa overstays and security screening. #nigerianews #nigeriannews #unitedstates

@Elijah_Kafula Why do people think South Africans hate Zambians ? Zimbians don't cause problems in SA. This maybe due to high crime in SA. In our country it's bad they kill about 40 - 70 people every day.We are also not happy about this.
