#OnThisDay 28th November 1896, Magnus Volk’s legendary Brighton & Rottingdean Seashore Electric Railway (nicknamed “Daddy-long-legs”) opened. The single car “Pioneer” with its luxuriously appointed interior and had to be driven by a qualified sea captain, for it ran on rails along the rocky foreshore to avoid difficult cliff terrain. But a storm damaged it badly just a week after opening, and it reopened at huge expense the following year. It became hugely popular, much like the connecting @volksrailway. Alas new sea defences needed to be built across the route and an avoiding line was too costly. It was closed in Jan 1901: substantial parts remained intact until 1910 but even today you can still see the route cut through rock and the concrete bases of the electricity poles at low tide.
