We’ve responded to the statutory education bodies and @GMCUK urging them to reconsider the decision to withdraw candidates applying for current HST places due to the 2023 MRCP(UK) part 2 exam results error. We’re deeply disappointed at their approach: ow.ly/zPOb50V7INU

Today we have started a review of postgraduate medical training led by @NHSEnglandNMD and @CMO_England Listen to @NavinaEvans explaining more. Find out more at england.nhs.uk/postgraduate-m…

Did you know that there is a doctor training job crisis in the NHS? In 2024, over 6000 doctors applied for internal medical training, with only 1698 training spaces for them. 1000s of doctors are being turned away from being allowed to train as medical specialists because of these training bottlenecks. This means doctors can’t become cardiologists, or specialise in diabetes for example, despite the soaring waiting lists. These training numbers are being centrally restricted by @UKLabour. It is a scandal that we have underemployed and underutilised doctors who want to help the NHS, but can’t. Fix this @wesstreeting!

Today we’ve published our new interim guidance on the scope, supervision and employment of physician associates working in medical specialties. In the guidance, we’re clear that: - PAs must support – not replace – doctors and have a nationally defined ceiling of practice - PAs must never function as a senior decision maker - PAs should only be supervised by consultants, specialist or associate specialist doctors - PAs cannot prescribe medications regardless of any prior healthcare background - PAs must clearly explain their role to patients, their families and carers, as well as colleagues and supervisors. The @gmcuk #StateOfMed report makes clear there must be a review of postgraduate training. 'It is imperative that our next generation of physicians are valued and supported in their educational and training journeys. We need to keep them in our UK training system rather than force them out. They need to feel valued and supported and we call for action and reform of the recruitment and training pathways.’ @Mumtaz_Patel_1 Read our full response to the report: ow.ly/q1mB50Uhxui
