@BretWeinstein @WebSummit Other than a paycheck I don’t see how you possibly think this is a good use of time. Sad to see such a great mind waste his time on so many pointless topics

At noon, PT today, I will be explaining why “abolishing podcasts,” as Michael Tracey wants to do, is one of the five worst ideas of all time. If you’re at Web Summit, come check it out. Hopefully @WebSummit will broadcast it live, or put it up for later viewing.
Michael Tracey@mtracey

I will be advocating for the abolition of all podcasts in Vancouver at the "Web Summit," May 11-14, if you happen to be around, and want to hear why you should abolish your stupid podcast

@GGunthorp Externalities can be both positive and negative. Government is either too heavy handed and controlling (limiting positive externalities/innovation ) or too loose with regulations (negative externalities go unaccounted for) No idea what the sweet spot is tbh

@Seanml17 Agriculture is full of externalities. We should have that discussion in rural America!

Serious controversial discussion for Saturday. Farmers, how many of your ancestors cleared land that would have been magnitudes more difficult than returning this land to farmland? The 15% service factor in winter in NY is pretty accurate. Lower retail electricity? No.
Alex Fasulo@alex_fasulo

They're taking our best farmland, grasslands, wetlands, and forests for a form of energy that ONLY generates at 15% of its annual potential in Upstate NY. The 100MW facility they promised would lower your bills in your town? I'm guessing your bills haven't gone down. In fact, they've gone up thanks to this state's need to socialize the failed rollout of "clean" energy. No, that 100MW solar facility actually only generates 15MW. That solar facility has a 15% capacity factor. A solar project’s capacity factor is how much electricity it actually produces over a year ÷ how much it would produce if it ran at full output 24/7. You get 15%. That's why a disgusting amount of subsidies, credits, and initial contracts to build are needed to prop up this failing industry in northern climates. How does New York compare to other parts of the country? U.S. average solar capacity factor: 23–24% High-sun regions (CA, Southwest): 25–30% New York / Northeast: 15% Many argue destroying the beauty of California for only 25MW generated at a 100MW solar facility also makes no sense. I agree. But when you look at Upstate NY, it's clearly one of the worst regions in the entire country to claim that commercial solar works here. "But we need to diversify our grid!" Actually, when we needed the power most, during December, January, and February, these solar complexes fall to nearly 0% of power generated. It was observed this winter on the NYISO dashboard. Why? Snow sits on the panels. With 2,000 acres of panels covered at a time, no one is removing the snow. When we need power most, these complexes don't provide. We're allowing foreign corporations to destroy thousands of acres at a time, acres that are home to endangered species, Indian burial grounds, protected habitats, prime USDA farming soils that once grew our food, and American history. All for a form of energy that, on the books, makes no logical sense in Upstate NY. And that's just the facts. All of the numbers in this post can be verified if you do your own research. Solar and wind has failed in northern climates. We cannot allow our state governments to continue forcing it into our rural towns by sidestepping our home rule. They are making money off pillaging our towns, counting on us to idly sit by while it happens. I will not sit by idly. (I am commenting on COMMERCIAL solar in this post. Not the 3 panels on your rooftop.)

@GGunthorp Balancing the trade off between Freedom and Externalities is one our countries biggest challenge. Anyone who has an immediate answer has not fully understood the puzzle.

@Seanml17 I can appreciate that opinion. Solar on farmland is controversial. I think agriculture shouldn’t have pursued contract pork and poultry. I think it’s a mistake. But if people want to get a mortgage to buy a job for the man and sell the independents out it’s a free country.

Welcome to the most asymmetric trade in modern financial history. The thread below lays out why. The opportunity exists because capital has chased the AI trade while ignoring the physical assets AI requires to run — assets that have quietly become the best-performing asset class of the decade. Since October 2020 when we first called for the commodity super cycle: QCI Total Return +217%, GSCI Total Return +205%, Gold +140%. NASDAQ trails at +130%. S&P 500 at +85%. The top three are all commodities. Yet oil cannot get out of its own way while copper and the broader atom complex prints fresh highs . That is the dislocation. That is the trade. Get long. Buckle in. Hang on for the ride. Forgive the longer posts in this thread — attempting to mimic my old 10-bullet commodity takes. On to it.

If you are into permaculture, food forests, orchards, etc, there is not a single person I would recommend more to follow here, on YouTube and subscribing to their podcasts Stefan has influenced my farming practices as much as Greg Judy. He really is on that level

@Seanml17 @DavidBCollum I am 66. Kettlebells are not for old people, IMO. I think dumbbells are better. I was a college athlete.

I easily am carrying an extra 50 lbs of flab in my old age. I have peeled it off many times. (Got touch the bag before leading off again.) Today I begin another Great Reset that will explore different approaches one week at a time. Week one: simple intermittent fast (no food before 6:00 PM each day.) Did that as an athlete in college and for approaching a decade in taekowndo. But then I am going progressively more kinky. If you don't see anymore posts on the topic, it means I stole a base rather than touched the bag.

@isgitt_joh53252 @DavidBCollum They make kettlebells in weights as low as 5lbs. Swings are safe with good form. Often recommended for people after injuries. Secondly, being a “College athlete” means nothing to me. You should try Mountaineering at 10,000 feet for 3 weeks straight carrying weight.

@ThePathFoward25 Responding to your comment about your audience being primarily over the age of 40. I’m 32 and I’ve listened to every episode for years. I forward about half the episodes to my closest friends. The wise ones thank me for sharing.

@BretWeinstein Vultures will hunt fully alive and healthy baby lambs without some sort of protection (livestock guardian dog). I have also witnessed them eat the eyeballs out of healthy baby deer (fawns).

This was a great conversation. After spending several days with @PageauJonathan and @jgreenhall, I was sure it would be. What surprised me was how much the audience has appreciated it. I thought it would frustrate nearly everyone, I was wrong. Check it out
