@lesliemathys @withvisor it can be an unusual way to build, as revenue isn't the first focus... I try my best to optimize for fulfillment, and then try to shoehorn in some revenue... it takes a while, but it's nice if it's lucky enough to work...

@searchbound @withvisor Trying to take a leaf out of your book with how I run BOD, Peter. This post was resonated a lot with me, especially with regard to using it as an opportunity to study myself. Really good way of looking at things:
Peter Askew@searchbound

6th months in, developing ZooJobs․com as a job board (bought domain for $6k) - some observations/thoughts: 🦒 this is an entirely different build, compared to RanchWork․com (you'd assume it'd be similar, but no) 🦒 I had (almost) instant traction with RW... ZJ initial growth slower (see img), but positive overall (traffic wise, similar to Vidalia dev early days) 🦒 currently seeding one job per day. manually. no bots, no ai. me. this helps me soak-in industry. 🦒 zoos appear to have HR departments, so need to adjust on how to reach them effectively (w/ ranches, either the husband, or wife, or kids often post the job) 🦒 leaning towards yearly price for unlimited listings as my primary package (RW is a-la-carte, one-off postings) 🦒 no sales yet; don't really care; starting to think sales may occur after a hand shake (versus self-serve like RW) 🦒 might attend some zoo & aquarium conferences later this year to meet folks (like I did w/ duderanch․com & got my first sale) in these early days, another focus is (selfishly) studying myself, to determine if there's some sort of intrinsic motivation here. Some pull towards this industry - some magic sauce that makes it fun for me to return every day. I ain't interested in grinding some project out that might cost me my sanity. I prefer building something where it doesn't feel like I'm building; or doesn't feel like I'm serving. It feels natural. Effortless action sortof. Hell, you can call it wu wei if you want. I want to start working, and then kindof forget that I'm working. Finding projects like that is hard. But it's doable. You just have to build a lot of projects. I've built so many over the years, I can never quite tell if something might fit - I only know after I build it, and start serving. Happy to say this one has been quite fun. Maybe daily pics of koalas, lions, cheetahs, and sea otters (holding hands) makes it more interesting 🦦🐆🦁🐨🤷‍♂️ /fin

today: 〜 weighted jumprope for 1hr 〜 shipped 74 boxes of Vidalia onions 〜 got 3 paid job listings live on RanchWork 〜 added 1 free job listing on ZooJobs 〜 sent weekly RanchWork Jobs Email to 12k folks 〜 moving bookkeeping & CPA stuff to @withvisor 〜 added 'Aspen Meadow Pack Station' to PackTrip [img] 〜 am fiddling around with RanchWork menu to clean up today was a good day

🪏your 1st project doesn't have to be a homerun; you can start small if you want (that's how I did it). You could buy this expiring domain & start selling survival shovels. You could learn how to build an ecomm store, learn business, learn customer support, learn financial stuff, learn seo, learn ppc, learn analytics, learn social media, learn everything cause the project would force you to. That experience alone is worth more than an MBA. This is an entry point if you need one.

"so, let me get this straight, you spend your days correcting folks to (incorrectly) spell your business & domain name (while the correct spelling is typed out on your homepage); and the correct spelling domain is owned & operated by a confusingly similar biz? is that it?"

bought PackTrip․com for $599 via expiry. I like this name. I may run this at-cost in exchange for pack trip vacations. A directory seems natural - help folks find backcountry camping outfitters; my beta is live while full-site launch is late June.

the waiting period from (domain auction win) to (domain awarded) on GoDaddy is painfully inhuman and I give it a firm thumbs down; but I'll leave you with this image that represents the domain I bought and I'm excited to play with to see what happens.

I tried the new Amazon Dash Cart at Whole Foods today and I’m convinced this is way better than self checkout and maybe is the future of grocery shopping The shopping cart has an integrated barcode scanner and scale and computer vision systems so you just swipe before you drop your groceries in the cart Then you simply walk out of the store!! There’s no checkout because you link the cart to your phone / Amazon account I think Amazon will roll it out to 25 more stores by the end of 2026 Whether people actually use and adopt it is another question! But if I had to pick between this or self-checkout then I would pick one of these every time I still prefer a human checkout however because it is easier and faster and they are better at bagging it than me

Or forget about all of this and just post what you like posting about. Reply when you can be helpful. Share when something is worth sharing. People can tell you're posting for "the algorithm" and they hate that.

I basically perform my own research and uncover available jobs from zoos, and re-format & post on my site. I'll also curate ones that zoos independently submit (but that's slow rn as this project is young) see if this tweet I did helps, regarding background: x.com/searchbound/st…

@searchbound hey peter, interesting to see you build a job board from scratch! thanks for sharing! may share where you get your initial data for jobs from? because you write you seed manually. so people use your job listing form?
