Building a startup in Naples, Italy is playing on hard mode. Compared to the rest of Europe, VC funding is virtually nonexistent. Even worse is the cultural stigma, if you're an entrepreneur here, people often look at you with a judgmental eye, assuming you're just trying to run a scam rather than build a legitimate business. That’s why seeing Neapolitan developers and builders succeeding out in the world fills me with so much pride. But it's also bittersweet. I want that incredible talent to build here, in our own city, not just abroad. That’s exactly what I'm trying to change, alongside other resilient builders like @emanueledpt who choose to stay and fight for our ecosystem. Recently at the Raise Summit, I met Ugo. He’s from Naples and is out there working for @CockroachDB (an incredible database I’ve used so many times!). I'm 21, and connecting with experienced leaders from my hometown who are operating at the absolute highest level globally is one of the greatest feelings ever. Every time I see things like this, I'm filled with joy. We have the talent. We just have to keep building.

@lachlan_xyz @SebJohnsonUK @UKSovereignAI @leicesterliz What if datacentres were seen as a form of energy storage? Converting electrical energy into heat energy via computation, but rather than expelling the heat, it's stored in a thermal battery?

@SebZuddas @SebJohnsonUK @UKSovereignAI @leicesterliz I'm far form an expert, and actually missed the AI Growth Zones to locate data centres in areas of abundant generation, but we should just scrap uniform wholesale pricing.

The @UKSovereignAI team just launched a substack. First edition written by @leicesterliz. It's a great first publication and I agree with pretty much all of it. There is one GLARING omission though. First the key points Liz Kendall puts across: > The UK needs a trillion pound company > We need to own the full stack > The Government needs to adopt as much AI as possible > We need more government procurement. Overall, I would say this is one of the most pro-tech, pro-AI opinion pieces to come out of any UK government ever. Both Liz Kendall and @KanishkaNarayan understand the scale of the issue, and what's at stake if we don't fix it. The omission though, is OF COURSE energy. It seems VERY challenging to pursue a policy of full-stack AI sovereignty with our current energy policy. The article talks about re-industrialising the country. We can't re-industrialise with energy prices as high as they are. The article talks about sovereignty across the stack - the very first layer of that stack is energy. Being dependent on other countries for our energy means that we'll never be truly sovereign. Energy is not mentioned in the article. It's of course complicated for the government, given that it's an entirely separate department, run by a seperate minister, BUT it still needs to be addressed and fixed.

@lachlan_xyz @SebJohnsonUK @UKSovereignAI @leicesterliz Unsure if it’s policy reform in energy we need, or if it’s political will and money. Whilst many assume it’s a case of more generation (through renewables or nuclear plants) the bottleneck is balancing grid congestion, energy storage and electrification.

@SebJohnsonUK @UKSovereignAI @leicesterliz Crazy to see politicians writing on substack, but this is the future we need! I'm intrigued as to how far Sov/AI's remit could go into investing in pure energy plays but would be interesting. We do need radical policy reform in energy and i hope we see it!

@leicesterliz @UKSovereignAI Although the writing is reasonable, how someone non-technical can drive a nation’s AI strategy is beyond me. Especially when the strategy is “jump on the hype train”.
