Trying to render large areas with lots of players is an engine problem, not a graphics problem.
The engine is 20 years old and the complexity they have tried to tack on over the years has resulted in that kind of bottleneck.
They need to modernize the engine if they want to improve the graphics or performance with player count at all
English

well HERE's an IDEA... why not just GIVE them the option to go full re or remain nostalgic... all parties win... those who wan t high def get it and those who want to keep that nostalgic feeling also get to keep it...
HOWEVER the issue could come when trying to render large areas with lots of players.
English

@met_oshi @TheRealWizar This is the point the game should be able to run completely maxed out with hardware like ours at high frame rates regardless of player count and the only reason it doesn’t is because the engine is too old.
English

@SeesInPixels @TheRealWizar It used to be worse for me until I turned off most of the spell density effects (I forget the option name, but the one that reduces the spell effects that others cast)
There's work to be done, but seeing lots of players have infamously destroyed most games' performance
English

@met_oshi @TheRealWizar I’m running my RAM at its rated 3200MHZ CL16 with tight timings and both my CPU and GPU are overclocked.
English

@SeesInPixels @TheRealWizar Have you got XMP enabled? I was able to get between 90-120 in most settings, but higher player counts dip it drastically; I also haven't tested things in Midnight, but did during TWW
Upgrading how it handles large amounts of players is vital, but I wasn't on about that
English

The engine is in dire straights. The CPU bottleneck at this point is extremely bad - epic battlegrounds are literally unplayable with a 5950x, 32GB of DDR4-3200 CL16 and a 4090.
Walking around a city with the game maxed out runs like ass while the GPU yawns and the two CPU cores the game decided to use are going apeshit and the game looks horrible compared to how it's running.
Sorry broseph but it's time for a new engine
English

@SeesInPixels @TheRealWizar They have been, and they've been upgrading the engine with each one
English

@Fateweaver2 @TheRealWizar I literally have been in this convo look through it. I even ripped part of the map and rendered it in blender.
English

@SeesInPixels @TheRealWizar Ok so show examples of rendering that retain the art style. Saying "it can be fixed" is a non argument. Like yea, no shit. And yet its not.
English

@nekollx @TheRealWizar That’s a nitpick and easily adjustable. I was just demonstrating what the game would look like with more realistic lighting and materials
English

@SeesInPixels @TheRealWizar The gamma is most game don't do true darkness becase not all users can see true dark
English

@LordAshbourne @TheRealWizar The strawman I am describing is the one where people say that any improvement to WoW’s graphics whatsoever would destroy the style
English

@SeesInPixels @TheRealWizar Then its not a strawman for people to be against the OP's idea?
English

@nekollx @TheRealWizar Colors untouched
🇺🇸🇺🇸SeesInPixels🇺🇸🇺🇸@SeesInPixels
Look at this. I ripped the assets, textures and map from the game data and loaded it into Blender and rendered it with good lighting, bump mapping and volumetric effects. It's the same exact low-poly models, handpainted textures, EVERYTHING, just presented with modern rendering tech. Sorry but this just looks BETTER and has the same fucking style.
English

@SeesInPixels @TheRealWizar and yet the example provided in this tweet doesn’t
English

@IEllect53684 @TheRealWizar Bullshit. They could easily make stuff like this optional. Turn it off if your pc can’t handle it.
In fact, the engine upgrades required to make better visuals a thing in WoW would also improve performance for people on shitty rigs.
English

@SeesInPixels @TheRealWizar One of the strong points of wow was it was easily accessible, especially in the early days, it ran on basic PC's you didn't need a juggernaut gaming PC.
A change like this would require hardware upgrades by most of the community.
English

@nekollx @TheRealWizar You can improve the graphics without nuking the color palette as well
English

@SeesInPixels @TheRealWizar to be fair even in the video you’re looking at right now all the colors get crushed with each improvement
Sure, you can improve the quality all you want, but if you’re sacrificing the color so it becomes more and more brown each time it kind of kills the vibe
English

@LordAshbourne @TheRealWizar It’s a strawman because OPs example is not what people are even asking for
English

@SeesInPixels @TheRealWizar So its not a strawman. The op said to update the graphics and using his shitty ai he did, to something that is just UR5 slop.
English

@LordAshbourne @TheRealWizar Yes the example goes too far but others I have shared in these replies do not
English

@SeesInPixels @TheRealWizar This isnt the same artstyle, its trying to make it realistic rather than cartoony.
English

@TheRealWizar I am of the rare opinion that things only truly got bad AFTER Cata. MoP was my “why” moment
English

@Fromcero @TheRealWizar Right it just makes what’s already there pop and feel more beautiful. Doesn’t change a bit of the style
English

I never said that doing what was in the OPs video was a good idea, I agree that it goes too far. But I think my render here hits a sweet spot where its modernizing it without changing it too much.
They have already been trying to move in that direction but their old ass engine cannot handle it
English

@SeesInPixels @TheRealWizar That's not what's going on in that video. Also fyi if you change enough of the game even if it's lighting it is considered a style change.
English

@Fromcero @TheRealWizar This is a far better example of what people are asking for, not this total makeover AI slop nonsense being used as an example.x.com/SeesInPixels/s…
🇺🇸🇺🇸SeesInPixels🇺🇸🇺🇸@SeesInPixels
@KlaelDemon @sonii Here's a before and after, what some solid enhancements would look like in WoW that don't break the style (we lost some green tint in the process but that's easy to get back)
English

@SeesInPixels @TheRealWizar The example video changes the art style, do you disagree?
Blizzard has updated the graphics before so that’s def not an issues fundementaly but this example ain’t it imo
English

Look at this.
I ripped the assets, textures and map from the game data and loaded it into Blender and rendered it with good lighting, bump mapping and volumetric effects.
It's the same exact low-poly models, handpainted textures, EVERYTHING, just presented with modern rendering tech.
Sorry but this just looks BETTER and has the same fucking style.
English

@SeesInPixels @TheRealWizar A considerable aspect of the games art style is a low resolution hand painted game. Extracting that context and saying nothing is lost is actually strawman.
English

@Danaturr @TheRealWizar You can have cartoon style, colors, proportions and whatnot without it looking like a fucking Nintendo 64 game dude.
You’re presenting a false dichotomy
English

@SeesInPixels @TheRealWizar The example we're seeing here does destroy the artstyle.
English

@vobic13 @TheRealWizar I never said I wanted WoW to look like the example video. All I said is they could improve the graphics without ruining the style.
The example video ruins the style by replacing all the hand painted textures with photorealistic ones and is AI slop.
English

@SeesInPixels @TheRealWizar it's amazing how much of an idiot you are. if you want WoW to look like that then you must think everyone is able to afford a 5090 with the best cpu. WoW prides itself for being able to run on all systems of all levels you complete and utter dumb fuck
