Progressive Democrats passed a law to ban ICE detention facilities. Otero County just renewed its contract anyway. Because this isn’t some abstract policy out there. This is hundreds of jobs. This is real paychecks. This is a local economy that depends on it. Democrats knew that. They just didn’t care. It’s easy to pass a bill when you’re not the one dealing with the consequences. I don’t always agree with Fetterman’s politics but I sure do appreciate his comments lately on decency. At least he is polite and sincere and when you consider that to his Democrat friends he’s a rockstar.

NM has already cut GHG emissions by >21% from 2005 levels—at significant cost. E.g., NM recently shut down a 847 MW coal plant that supplied 12-15% of NM electricity. Now prices are expected to rise because the utility is trying to replace it with wind/solar + expensive storage.
