Israel is one of the most prolific sources of foreign interference in governance and democratic elections in the world today, to a degree easily comparable to Russia and China, vastly outpacing other threat actors like Iran. They frequently (and famously) throw their support behind far-right isolationist and ethnonationalist groups who oppose pluralistic democracy and want to replicate the ‘Israeli model’ of ethnonationalism at home. Their interference is often downplayed because of (1) American pressure on Israel’s behalf, and (2) domestic pro-Israel lobbies who threaten to sink politicians, civil servants, and governments in accusations of antisemitism for raising it as an issue. This is often a thorn in the side of domestic counterintelligence services, including in the US, where pressure from the ADL and others have been explicitly cited as strong deterrents against holding Israel accountable for both interference and espionage (both military and industrial). That the ADL intervened on Jonathan Pollard’s behalf when he was first tried, and Trump was compelled by Adelson and members of his own Administration to pardon Pollard’s handler on the last day of his first Presidency, are some of the most glaring public examples. Israel’s reputation as an election interference powerhouse is so significant it has spawned an entire cottage industry of private sector “interference-as-a-service” providers who operate both on behalf of the Israeli government and others, while offering a layer of plausible deniability. That their interference is not only allowed to persist but has become so infamous they now sell it as a private for-profit service just shows how much operational freedom they’ve been granted in democratic affairs the world over.

Niet luid, niet dramatisch, maar met zo’n keurige diplomatieke tik die juist daardoor extra ongemakkelijk is. De vraag is simpel: wat gebeurt hier precies in Amsterdam? Femke Halsema, jarenlang het zelfverklaarde geweten van progressief Nederland, krijgt nu zelf vragen over de klassiekers: vrijheid van meningsuiting, demonstratierecht, rechtsbescherming. De fundamenten waar ze haar politieke profiel op bouwde, liggen ineens onder een vergrootglas. Ironie? Dat station zijn we voorbij. Dit is geen losse klacht of ruis uit de marge. Dit zijn VN-rapporteurs die zich tot Nederland richten, met Amsterdam als concreet voorbeeld. Geen bijzaak, maar een signaal dat iets schuurt. En wat gebeurt er vervolgens? Den Haag doet wat Den Haag het beste kan: professioneel niets doen. Of beter gezegd, professioneel doen alsof er niets aan de hand is. In bestuurlijke kringen heet dat geen probleem, maar een “kwestie van duiding”. Met andere woorden: het ligt niet aan het handelen, maar aan hoe het wordt uitgelegd. Dus als er vragen komen over proportionaliteit en rechtsstatelijkheid, dan volgt geen reflectie, maar herformulering. Halsema zal benadrukken dat alles zorgvuldig en binnen de wet is verlopen. Dat er moeilijke keuzes nodig waren. Dat veiligheid nu eenmaal prioriteit heeft. Het bekende repertoire, overtuigend gebracht, zolang niemand te lang doorvraagt. Maar precies daar wringt het. Mensenrechten zijn er niet voor rustige tijden, maar juist voor momenten waarop bestuurders vinden dat ze “moeten doorpakken”. Ze vormen geen decor voor speeches, maar grenzen aan macht. Grenzen die, volgens de VN, in Amsterdam opvallend rekbaar lijken geworden. En dat maakt deze situatie interessanter dan één dossier. Want als een bestuurder die haar reputatie bouwde op burgerrechten nu zelf onderwerp is van internationale vragen daarover, dan zegt dat iets over een bredere bestuurscultuur. Een cultuur waarin goede bedoelingen belangrijker zijn geworden dan toetsbare uitkomsten. De VN stelt geen ideologische vragen, maar praktische: waar is de juridische onderbouwing? Waar zijn de waarborgen? Waar ligt de grens? Lastige vragen, vooral in een omgeving waar ze zelden nog gesteld worden. Dus blijft er één vraag over: wat doe je met zo’n tik op de vingers? Nog beter uitleggen dat alles klopt? Of heel even overwegen dat dat misschien niet zo is? Momenten waarop het simpelweg gaat om verantwoordelijkheid nemen. Dit is zo’n moment. De signalen uit de samenleving worden steeds moeilijker te negeren. Wantrouwen groeit, afstand tussen bestuur en burger neemt toe, en het gevoel dat de stad niet meer bestuurd wordt mét haar inwoners, maar óver hen, wordt steeds sterker. Dat is geen incident. Dat is een patroon. Leiderschap betekent niet alleen koers houden wanneer het comfortabel is. Het betekent ook erkennen wanneer het draagvlak is verdwenen. Wanneer besluiten, optreden en communicatie niet langer verbinden, maar juist vervreemden. Amsterdam verdient een burgemeester die boven twijfel verheven is in gezag en vertrouwen. Op dit moment staat dat gezag onder druk, zichtbaar, voelbaar en steeds breder gedragen. Aanhouden van positie onder die omstandigheden versterkt het probleem. Het verlengt een situatie waarin bestuurlijke energie verloren gaat aan verdedigen, verklaren en herstellen, in plaats van vooruitkijken en verbinden. Aftreden is geen nederlaag. Het is, in situaties als deze, de meest krachtige vorm van verantwoordelijkheid nemen. Het opent de deur naar herstel van vertrouwen, naar een nieuw begin, en naar een bestuur dat weer onomstreden kan functioneren in het belang van alle Amsterdammers. Who knows whether either claim is true? What information was Kent accused of leaking — and to whom? What exactly did Tucker say to Iranian officials? Or are both men being targeted for opposing the war? Or is none of this accurate, and neither is under investigation at all? I'm so tired of people telling us that there is a difference between Anti Jewish and Anti Israel. Explain to me why, as an American born Jew, walking around with a Kipa, I have had 4 different incidents of having Anti Israel hate spewed at me, just walking, minding my own business. I am not Israeli, I am not wearing an IDF uniform, I'm in Miami. The math just isn't mathing, sorry.
