Just throwing this one out there as I was asked this question earlier today. A couple both working with a combined income of £50,000 would pay £11,500 a year in income tax and national insurance, Another couple receiving £50,000 in benefits including Universal Credit, Personal Independent Payment, Housing Benefit, Income Support and Child Benefit would pay no income tax or national insurance, keeping the full £50,000. Should the non-working couple on £50,000 a year pay the same amount of income tax and national insurance as the working couple? Please leave a comment below.

Just to clarify Niamh, genuinely, are you now moving into a commentator space? This piece goes beyond your usual reporting. You’re entitled to a view as anyone else is of course. The piece however positions yourself as an ambassador for the GAA. If you’re expressing personal views on it, could you shed some light on your perspective of the multitude of GAA clubs, grounds and tournaments named after IRA killers? What’s your thoughts on the GAA Constitution containing an explicit political manifesto on the statehood of the island, and thus, how can it be inclusive of unionists or British people considering its political outlook? Even when the GAA describes sports such as football and rugby, as “imported games.” Also, the official supplier of GAA shirts often releases controversial and very political clothing? Do you think that’s wise? Helpful? Especially if that controversial clothing is being worn on university campuses? Again, do you think is a positive for the GAA? If you’re going to talk about the GAA, its fans, and the cultural challenges around it, then address why people find it controversial. Your piece avoids all of that, alsmost as if it doesn’t exist, and therefore responds to small parts of a speech which is actually referring to a larger problem.

I was silenced in the Chamber today for talking about the impact Trump’s Iran war is having on people’s energy bills. Deputy Speaker Steve Aiken stopped me from speaking. The cost of living is hurting people. I will ALWAYS speak up for them. #CostOfLiving

For the second time in recent weeks, a full independent investigation into me has found no breach of the Code of Conduct. This latest case centred on a social media post where I criticised the Alliance Party — straightforward political commentary. The outcome speaks for itself, even if it has taken a number of months to conclude. It’s becoming increasingly clear that I am being subjected to continuous vexatious claims by those who would rather try to silence or target me than engage in honest political debate. But I won’t be deterred. These processes take time and they take their toll — but I get on with the job regardless. I was elected because of who I am — and that won’t be changing. I’ll continue to speak plainly, face down those who come after me, and do and say what I believe is right, while continuing to deliver for the place and people I love — exactly what I was elected to do. Thank you for continuing to stand with me — your support, messages and encouragement mean more than you know ❤️

The SDLP leader and MP, Claire Hanna, was clearly very out of her depth on @BBCNolan this morning despite very easy questioning. She was NOT over the facts and spent her time throwing the term “fascist” around when speaking about Trump. Very poor performance - SAD!

@StephenNolan @BBCNolan @StephenNolan can you clarify why a section of the radio show this morning when a caller challenged Claire Hanna was edited out of the BBC Sounds catch-up? Was this an example of an MP demanding censorship? Or has BBC become Judge & Jury?

@DannyDonnelly1 Will you campaign for legislation for the additional revenue to go to NHS who need it rather than the retailers who don’t? Do you not see this is basically a free kick for retailers who could increase their profits to the detriment of NHS patients?

Minimum Unit Pricing on alcohol saves lives. Sometimes it’s not what you want to hear; it’s what you need to hear. 👂
Ulster Unionist Party@uuponline

Political failure on Minimum Unit Pricing will be measured in lives lost Ulster Unionist Health Spokesperson Alan Chambers MLA has said the failure of the Executive to pass Minimum Unit Pricing on alcohol represents a profound missed opportunity to save lives, reduce harm, and tackle deep-rooted health inequalities across Northern Ireland. The North Down MLA said: “The evidence in favour of Minimum Unit Pricing is overwhelming and widely accepted across the public health community. Yet despite this, the DUP has decided to single-handedly use its Executive veto to shamefully block progress being made. “Let us be absolutely clear, this decision will have real-world consequences. Lives that could have been saved will be lost. Families that could have been spared grief will instead suffer. Our already overstretched health service will continue to bear a burden that could have been reduced. “As Minister, Mike Nesbitt has shown leadership and determination in repeatedly attempting to push for this measure. He has listened to clinicians, to public health experts, and to the data. He understands that Minimum Unit Pricing is not a silver bullet - but it is one of the most effective tools available to reduce alcohol harm. “Every year in Northern Ireland, hundreds of people die as a direct result of alcohol. Thousands more are admitted to hospital. “We know that Minimum Unit Pricing works. We have seen the evidence from Scotland, where it is saving lives. We know it targets the heaviest drinkers and reduces harm where it is most acute. And we know it would have made a meaningful difference here. The DUP previously supported this measure - yet have now u-turned still without any explanation. “Even if the next mandate does deliver Minimum Unit Pricing, the reality is that the cost of this latest missed opportunity will be measured not just in pounds, but in lives lost.”

@DannyDonnelly1 @allianceparty Do you intend on campaigning for legislation that will result in the NHS benefiting from the additional money charged or the alcohol or are you content that the retailer will pocket the extra money for no commitment? Why have you not highlighted that there is no incentive to NHS?
