Tragic news has emerged today with the crash of Air India flight AI 171 near Ahmedabad. In the aftermath of any air crash in India, it’s important to understand what happens next. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) takes charge of the investigation. They operate under the Ministry of Civil Aviation and follow global rules set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), specifically Annex 13. The primary aim of such investigations is not to assign blame, but to learn what went wrong and prevent similar accidents in the future. Under Annex 13, several countries may get involved. Since the crash happened in India, India leads the investigation. As the aircraft was manufactured by Boeing, the United States (as the State of Manufacture) will be involved. The engine manufacturers also participate. If passengers from other countries were on board, those nations may also assist or observe. The investigation begins immediately — securing the crash site, recovering the black boxes (flight data and cockpit voice recorders), interviewing witnesses, and analysing technical, human, and environmental factors. A Preliminary Report is usually published within 30 days. A Final Report, with findings and safety recommendations, can take several months longer. #sarinlaw #airindiacrash
