People like to complain that the dating process today is incredibly broken. Everyone likes to go straight to blaming the apps, but that is just one part of the equation. This graph shows it is a major part of the equation. So the question then becomes why do the apps dominate the dating process? Simple leverage. For those familiar with the pareto distribution I think this graph is a clear demonstration of the principle at work. When it comes to finding the right partner the apps are the highest leverage opportunity. Your friends probably don't have 1000s friends you could potentially date. Same goes for your work, neighbors, and all other forms of meeting people. The apps on the other hand do. This leverage is great, but this leverage inherently creates the biggest problem with the apps. The paradox of choice. There are too many options so people keep swiping in hopes that they are going to find someone even better to date.
