Zalesne believes in community schools. Schools are community hubs. White thinks funding is key to supporting community schools.

Both candidates feel strongly about making DC a state. This must be a priority for the Democratic Party.

Zalesne understands it was Republican meddling in DC affairs 25 years ago that led to the rise of charter schools in our city.

Federal threats to civil rights enforcement, supports to English language learners and threats to students with disabilities are of the most concern.

None of the candidates seem inclined to continue mayoral control over schools. All admit they aren’t education experts, and need to have agency heads to lead the schools who are experts.

@maustermuhle That confused me. I don't think residents have been asking for more traffic stops. People want traffic stops on NY Ave? Really???

This seemed to be echoed by Chief Smith, who said residents had been asking for more traffic stops, and since those are now happening, all’s good, right? But residents are most concerned with the ICE enforcement that accompanies those stops.

My read on what Bowser said today: She seems to be guessing that this “surge” won’t end after 30 days, so she is trying to make the best of it (in terms of keeping crime down). But that risks dismissing residents’ biggest concerns with how the feds have been doing their jobs.

.@MayorBowser is about to give the press an update about all things federal surge in D.C., so stay tuned for tidbits.

@maustermuhle Who knows how much pressure @MayorBowser was under to say this takeover of DC is making the city safer. She was asked at least three times if the takeover would end after 30 days, and she never answered the question.

@maustermuhle Get them to remove the invasive Tree of Heaven which is the host plant for the Spotted Lanternfly. They can kill the Spotted Lanternflies while they're at it.

Soon after Trump announced his federal surge in D.C. a source shared with me a list of possible volunteer projects in federal parks that the National Guard could assist with. These were compiled by folks in NPS. Litter removal is among the projects.

Our foreparents defeated authoritarianism in their day with less resources than we have now. Their legacy is one of our greatest resources. It’s our time now.

@MurielBowser All of you who have posted unkind replies might have issues with Mayor Bowser. I'm a resident of DC, and I don't want this federal takeover of our city. I find it scary and unsettling.

On 14th & R this morning in DC, officers with vests that said only police detained a man who seemed to have been riding a moped, taking him down as passerby screamed. Officers refused to say what agency they’re with. Their unmarked cars had Maryland plates. @washingtonpost

Thank you AG Schwalb for standing up for DC.
AG Brian Schwalb@DCAttorneyGen

The outcome of today’s hearing is a win for Home Rule and upholds the District’s right to operate its own local police force. The Court recognized that it was clearly unlawful for the Administration to try to seize control of the Metropolitan Police Department. Chief Smith and @MayorBowser rightfully remain in command of MPD. There is still a long road ahead, but together, we will keep fighting to defend the District’s self-governance and protect the rights and safety of DC residents.
