STRAIGHT FROM THE FRONT LINES. I am a nurse with 12 years’ experience in our public hospitals and I am writing this with a very heavy heart. I still love my job and I come to work every day wanting to help people, but I can’t anymore. My own colleagues are breaking me down. Most of the nurses in my ward are only here for the paycheck. They belong to the union and they do the bare minimum. They come late, sit on their phones, ignore patients calling for help, and even shout at old people who are scared and sick. If I try to do extra, such as wash a patient, finish the notes, or stay late to make sure someone is comfortable, they turn on me. They say I make them look bad and they threaten me. There is no empathy, no professionalism left. Just laziness, all because they are protected by the union and their relatives. The hospital bosses are useless. They are deployed cadres who know nothing about healthcare. Everything is about tenders and friends, while we run out of medicines and patients sleep on the floor. The government people who are supposed to check on us are just as bad, lazy, corrupt, and only put their relatives and comrades in these positions. I am tired of fighting alone. Every day I see people suffering and dying because basic care is not given. This is not why I became a nurse. I have decided I want to leave South Africa. If President Trump is really offering refuge to South Africans who can’t take it anymore, then I am ready to go. I just want to work somewhere where I can be a proper nurse without being blocked and punished for doing my job. I am not a traitor.
