The Forgotten River That Once Divided Jagannath's Rath Yatra! Few know that centuries ago, a river called Malini, a tributary of the Bhargavi, flowed across today's Bada Danda in Puri, separating the Jagannath Temple from the Gundicha Temple. During Rath Yatra, the deities could not complete the journey in a single procession. They were taken to the riverbank, carried across the water, and placed onto another set of chariots waiting on the opposite side. This required six chariots instead of the three used today. It's said that Queen Saradha Devi, after receiving a divine dream from Bhagavan Jagannath, ordered the river's course to be closed and its bed filled with sand. The reclaimed stretch came to be known as Saradha Bali, allowing the Rath Yatra to become one continuous, uninterrupted procession. Shubh Ratri 🙏🏽
