“Daddy, don’t talk loud…” I’ve written on a number of occasions about what psychologists call “theory of mind.” Typically emerging between 3 and 5, theory of mind refers to one’s ability to recognize the thoughts, feelings, and differing perspectives of others. And wow… does this little guy ever have it down pat. When Dad inquires (somewhat comically) about his best friend, he responds - IN A WHISPER - that his best friend is Daddy. But watch what happens when dad repeats his statement aloud. Our hero urges his father to lower his voice out of consideration for Mom, whom he fears may be within earshot and disappointed by his selection. Interestingly, it may well be this same theory of mind that caused him to select Daddy in the first place - recognizing his father’s vested interest in the question. While his father has definitely (and deliberately) placed him in an awkward situation, you have to be impressed by the emotional intelligence on display here as this preschooler deftly navigates the feeling of his parents, with careful consideration of both.
