Sublimes auto reload feature has ben such a godsend for that.

geometry level is before rasterization, ray tracing, material lighting, shadows, and reconstruction occur.
no pixel or frame exists yet.

And you're right it doesn't add lighting or anything, because it's not generative. It takes existing assets and punches them up to create a more realistic image.
