@scotlandscoeff1 First it hits his head then it’s hand. Have you ever see someone throwing a ball that for away in that position. No penalty according the rules, first head and then (own) hand

My take: the ball hitting a hand is not always a handball offence. You have to either 1.) deliberately touch the ball with your hand, or 2.) ball hits your hand/arm when it's made your body unnaturally bigger. This isn't deliberate, and if the ball hits his hand - which is on his forehead in the middle of a normal footballing challenge - he hasn't made his body unnaturally bigger. Because the ball would have hit his head anyway, so his hand on his head does not make his body unnaturally bigger. Furthermore, VAR can only recommend an on-field review for a clear and obvious error. There is only one camera angle available, which does not show that the referee has missed a clear and obvious error. We can't see clearly where the ball hits. This is categorically not what VAR was brought in for, and it all needs ripped up in the summer. This is a really poor look for Scottish football, as you can see from the international condemnation online since the game. You really have to feel for Hearts. Unless you're a Celtic fan of course, that must have been class. But if you're not a Celtic fan. Deary me. Could be a generation defining decision, never mind season defining!

Gary Lineker was quick to give his opinion on the penalty awarded. Any footballer who has played at a high level will be able to see his point of view. He jumps with the ball and tries to protect his face from the other player’s arm. Unfortunately, his hand goes a little (too) high, and as a result, the ball hits his hand slightly after he heads it away. A footballer would never consider this a penalty because the ball is headed away 99% of the time and only hits his hand 1% of the time. And the hand is there to protect oneself! The referee consults the VAR because, when zooming in, it looks as though he is putting his hand in front of his head. That is true, but the ball is headed (far) away and, as it is cleared, the ball lightly touches his hand. This can and must never be a penalty, so I fully understand the fuss. We have to deal with the VAR, and sometimes it goes our way and sometimes it doesn’t. An entire season doesn’t hinge on this. Hopefully Saturday’s match won’t be decided by the VAR…

@Sharperly2 @The_FOH He jumps with his elbows and uses one to get height over trusty by digging it into his neck. That is all on him. It's a handball. The keeper on maeda was a penalty too not given.

@vetanari @GaryLineker You have a point! But a penalty for this little hands after the ball was headed far away, is not a penalty. But when VAR this moment and zoom in, it is 50/50. But for a footballer this never is a penalty. Maybe there must come referees who played football on a high level.

It is a little hands yes, but not a penalty. The direction of the ball didn’t change and it was headed far away. You must be Superman to throw with your hans so far. But is and was difficult for the VAR. I understand the penalty was given, but the VAR is too often the “winner” or “looser” and the last few matches Hearts were unlucky with a couple game deciding decisions. I understand they are upset. But now they must go for the match Saturday, let it be a big and nice battle without the VAR (deciding) involved.

Swear I’ve never seen world football so angry at a decision like the one Celtic have been given at Motherwell. People with no vested interest in Rangers, Celtic, Hearts or Scottish football whatsoever chipping in calling out how mental it was to give that as a penalty. Makes you sick Hearts could, and probably will, lose the league because of that.
