A Letter from a Mother’s Heart: 13th July 2026 Practice as a Winner Dear High Achievers. Have you ever noticed that champions do not suddenly become champions on the day of the competition? The world may celebrate them on the podium, but their victory was actually won long before the applause began. One of my favourite athletes, Michael Jordan, once said, "I play to win, whether during practice or a real game." Think about that for a moment. He did not say, "I play to win only when everyone is watching." He believed that every practice session deserved the same commitment as the championship game. His winning attitude was not reserved for the spotlight; it was a habit he carried into every training session. Many years ago, Shakespeare House won our school sports competition. To many people, it looked like an unexpected victory. But those who watched them closely knew better. They had already been behaving like champions throughout their practices. They planned carefully, trained consistently, encouraged one another, and treated every practice as though it were the final competition. Their victory was not a surprise. It was simply the visible reward for invisible preparation. There is an ancient saying by the Greek poet Archilochus: "We do not rise to the level of our expectations; we fall to the level of our training." Another great warrior, Miyamoto Musashi, said, "You can only fight the way you practice." These words have stood the test of time because they reveal a timeless truth: when the moment of challenge arrives, we do not suddenly become better. We perform according to how well we have prepared. Imagine that you were fighting for your life. Would you say, "I don't feel like trying today"? Would you decide to do things carelessly? Would you settle for doing the bare minimum? Certainly not. When everything depends on you, excuses disappear. What remains is what you have practiced, what you have learned, and the discipline you have built over time. Life may not always be a fight for survival, but every examination, every speech, every music performance, every sports competition, and every opportunity you receive asks one important question: How prepared are you? At St. Mark's College Namagoma, many of us are preparing for examinations, debates, sporting events, leadership responsibilities, or personal goals. Success in all these areas will not depend on what happens on the day of the event alone. It will depend on the quality of our preparation today. Every rehearsal matters. Every lesson matters. Every assignment matters. Every revision session matters. Every time you choose discipline over distraction, you are practicing as a winner. The encouraging news is that excellence is not reserved for those who are already gifted. It belongs to those who are willing to keep improving. If you are struggling with Mathematics today, keep practicing. If public speaking makes you nervous, keep practicing. If you are learning a musical instrument and it feels difficult, keep practicing. If your dance steps are not yet perfect, keep practicing. Each day of faithful practice makes you stronger than you were yesterday. Growth may be slow, but it is always happening. The greatest danger is not that you lack ability. The greatest danger is giving up before your hard work begins to bear fruit. Remember, every expert was once a beginner. Every confident performer was once afraid. Every champion once struggled. The difference is that they refused to stop practicing. As we prepare for any competitions and continue striving for academic excellence, let us give every practice session our very best. Let us rehearse with purpose, study with commitment, and serve with excellence. Do not wait until the day of the competition to become a winner. Be a winner in practice. Because when you practice like a champion, performing like one becomes natural. As High Achievers, let us remember that Excellence is our Tradition, and it is our Language. I believe in you.
