At approximately 9:41 p.m., officers with the Los Angeles Police Department initiated a pursuit of a stolen Los Angeles City Fire Department ambulance. The pursuit continued until the California Highway Patrol assumed primary responsibility. CHP officers from the Altadena area positioned behind the ambulance on the eastbound 210 Freeway as the suspect continued traveling through multiple freeway transitions, moving from the 210 Freeway to the 5 Freeway and then onto the northbound 14 Freeway. Antelope Valley CHP officers later took over the pursuit on the 14 Freeway. Spike strips were deployed but were initially unsuccessful. A subsequent spike strip deployment near Avenue S successfully disabled the ambulance. Despite the damage, the ambulance continued northbound before coming to a stop near the 14 Freeway and Rancho Vista Avenue after a tire separated from the vehicle. The suspect was taken into custody without further incident. CHP said the suspect had left his own vehicle at the location where the ambulance was taken. Officers also reported finding a shaved vehicle key in the suspect’s possession.
