@oerg866 I remember that about 10 years ago on our panels we booted into WEC2013 from a driver module running in a Linux based 2nd stage bootloader. It wasn't a huge deal at all. I remember just a bit of setup before calling the image entry point.

I have an absolutely cursed idea to launch the Windows 98 boot sector from within the Linux kernel. It's so cursed. Like, you can be literally cursed IRL and it's not gonna be as cursed as this idea. Maybe for QuickInstall 1.0 I will attempt to implement it...

@oerg866 @mdscntstmgm @therealjbenam More than once to me, too. First time with a Winbond flash in '97 when inserting it after a successful hotflash. I badly burned my fingertip. But surprisingly, that chip survived. As did all the other victims of my incompetence later. If it reeks of burning, cut the power😂

Just wanted to something with my theretroweb.com/motherboards/s… when I realized that the damn BIOS chip is missing. Like completely gone without a trace. @oerg866 you had the same board at some point, would you know what I need to search for to get a spare?

@RetroTechChris @wrljet I got most of my repair skills from fixing things that were not worth it. Me personally, I generally have fun fixing junk, even if it's just for it to collect dust again in the attic. Not everyone has though. I can accept that.

Yea. No. No. No, I will NOT be powering this up. It looks to have had a hard life, look at the yellow on that Molex connector. It's FILTHY. And the fan in the back? Completely seized. Hard pass. You'll probably find it on the next VCF free table for the adventurous 😅.

@S0N1Cua Corrosion is a nightmare. You're lucky it is just the keyboard interface. I imagine there's way worse to debug things that could have intermittent failures.

and it died again 🫠 this time it was this resistor array - keyboard clock almost shorted to the ground - 32 OHM

@8BitShowAndTell My aging hands have mixed feelings about the "Authentic rubber keys" though ;-)

With a working (and properly labelled) keyboard, I am totally interested in this!

@RetroTechChris I've got one of these. Always wanted to try it, but I got no tape. I remember using DDS on SCSI to make DB backups at the job 25 years ago. I want to try these as well.

@Gammitin No Internet and no guides. The schoolyard was our only source of information. Exchanging hand drawn maps was a common thing. For a while at least, until games started to have automappers.

@Shmbler Scavenging around for a bit of bread, not knowing what was around each corner in the darkness, your imagination really was on overload and it felt so immersive.

@Gammitin Those crawlers were more immersive than anyone could imagine today. I vividly remember how we screamed running from those respawning poisonous spiders in the EOB1 dwarven levels, always on the brink of death. This game scared the shit out of us.

@Shmbler I played the third one so much when I was a kid, crawling those dungeons never got old.

@8BitShowAndTell DM : € exchange rate was about 2:1 back then, but prices are more about 1:1 today. That crate of Coke is typically between 12-15€ today.

@8BitShowAndTell Not sure what these products even are. But here are some pictures of a Walmart flyer that I made 24 years ago in Germany. That particular outlet only existed a year or two under the Walmart brand. Walmart never gained a foothold here. Btw, check out the beautiful mobile phone ;-)

11 years ago I bought ROOSTER SCM, TASTY NUTS, DISCO SAMOSA, NN FUDGE BARS, and BEA HOMO MILK at the grocery store. Standard Canadian fare.
