Communication is one of your greatest tools as a football coach. With players. With staff. With parents. With your community. How you say it matters just as much as what you say. Steward it well. What’s one communication habit you’ve had to improve as a coach? 👇

Transactional vs. Transformational Coaching… Dan Hurley shared a story about asking Geno Auriemma for advice after a rough start last season. Geno didn’t mince words: “Listen, if the only gratification and the only part of coaching that excites you is winning the national championship, then you’ve lost your way, buddy! Where’s the joy in the things that you’ve always been about as a coach before you went on the championship run, like relationships with your players, like helping people get better, like making your team the best it can be. Be a coach, man. This is when you really need to be a leader. This team isn’t as good as last year’s, so what the hell are you going to do about it? Are you going home? Are you going to let this thing unravel?” That’s the tension every coach feels: Transactional vs. Transformational. Transactional coaching is outcome-obsessed. It’s about the wins, the losses, the trophies. The problem? When results don’t come, your purpose crumbles with them. Transformational coaching is different. It’s about people. It’s about growth. It’s about building something that lasts, whether the scoreboard agrees with you or not. And this is why mentorship matters so much in coaching. Left on our own, it’s easy to drift into a transactional mode without even realizing it. A trusted mentor can pull us back to center and remind us why we started coaching in the first place. To build relationships. To develop players as people. To make teams the best they can be. Wins matter. But they’re not the why. The why is impact. The why is growth. The why is leaving your players better than you found them. The process is the prize. Stay grounded. Stay on the path. Always remember your why.

Phil Jackson said, "Good teams become great ones when the members trust each other enough to surrender the Me for the We." Great teams know how to come together. • They connect. • They communicate. • They trust each other. 8 Things that Bring a Team Together:

20 Reminders for Coaches: 1. Be prepared to repeat yourself. Empathy towards their age, maturity level and aptitude is required. 2. Be an expert at communicating. No fluff. If we say it we BETTER follow through and when plans change there needs to be a clear reason as to why communicated. 3. Be the type of student we want them to be. There is always something to get better at. There are more ways to do it than what worked for us. 4. Team culture and atmosphere starts with us, the standards we set, what we allow and how we handle it when something happens that will affect that. 5. Be organized. Never show up without a plan. Be prepared for an audible at any point but never get caught not ready. 6. Lead by example. They are always watching. They will emulate our behavior. 7. If we want their trust we have to gain it. How we talk to them, how we talk with them, how we follow through and how we hold them all accountable, no matter who they are, who their parents are or how talented they are. 8. No standing around at practices. Find ways to keep everyone moving. No long lines in drills. 9. The game is relatable to life in many ways. Always be looking for ways to help them develop their character through it. 10. Never forget this is a game. They will only get to play it for a short period in their lives. We are here to teach it to them and help them enjoy it. Make it a memorable phase for them. 11. Coach confidence. If the goal is to get the most out of the players, they need to believe. Everything we do needs to be done with this in mind. 12. Get them talking. Hear their thoughts before we give ours. When they know they will be asked to speak we will see more focus and engagement. 13. TAKE NOTES! Keep a note pad during games/practice to jot down points to discuss. Don’t let those important moments slip through the cracks. 14. Make eye contact, take off your sunglasses. Make them take theirs off. Position yourself so their back is to the sun. 15. Pitchers and catchers need/deserve dedicated time each week for bullpens and dedicated time for catching fundamentals. NEVER IGNORE THEM!! 16. We never know what’s going on in their life. We get an opportunity to possibly be a bright light for them. This is MUCH bigger than the game. 17. Development is a process. The process requires patience and opportunity…And plenty of it. 18. Read your audience. Know when it’s time to move on. Once we lose their attention everything we want them to hear will go in one ear then out the other. 19. Be careful of getting caught up in the emotions of the moment. We need to remain calm and focused to make clear minded decisions. 20. It’s their game. Our playing days are long over. We are the lucky ones to get to be a part of their journey. Be grateful for it and be the best possible leader we can be FOR THEM.

Brandon Guyer - Major League Mindset
The 2026 spring season is underway for Coop Dogg 🙌 In the video you can see his simple reset routine in action today. One thing I’m most proud of as a coach and dad is that he’s done it so many times he doesn’t need a reminder really at all anymore. At the age of 6 it’s pretty much just second nature now. Does it guarantee success every time? Of course not. But it does guarantee he’ll give himself the best chance to succeed every single pitch. And in this game… that’s what it’s all about.

Dear adults: Always remember this is THEIR journey. This is about their life experiences. This is about them growing into strong, prepared, motivated, and people of strong character. Right now they get to play a game. One they enjoy and their journey and experiences will look different than the kid next to them but they all end up in the same place. Adults, most likely parents, spouses, and people contributing to society and their community. Be very careful about making the GAME bigger than it is. The GAME is part of THEIR process, not THE process.

So what? Next play up. The very best have an uncanny knack for not dwelling on the past or looking too far ahead to the future. Focus on now & what you need to do to get better each & every opportunity
