I've never mentioned this too publicly but about 5 years ago I started actively hanging out with my Discord just going into VC sitting by myself to see if viewers would hang out. Many came and went but there were a few regulars that would hang out a ton and willingly played one of my all-time favorites - Starcraft 2. We'd just play tons of custom games that I showed them and, over the course of years, I'd drag them along into games and random opportunities like SUPERVIVE. They went from being mostly viewers to my close friend group. All of them are skilled and intelligent at various things in life and I watched some of them go through high school into college and now finding jobs. They are also my ultimate advantage over a lot of creators. A lot of them are now part of my production team and I've hired, trained and rely on them for a lot of my channel work. Hiring in-house allowed me to instantly trust my editors/duos/thumbnail artists etc. and cut out a lot of the noise. I don't think many creators have or are even willing to engage with their communities in the way that I did a while back. In a way, it was good that I was so small back then because it was more likely that the people joining in were there for me and not clout. If I were to do this again, I have no doubt that a lot more people would hang around for parasocial reasons or otherwise. That is to say, it's unfortunate that there doesn't seem to be a good middleground between super clique-y inhouse small creators and unapproachable, closed-off bigger creators (not that i'm super famous at all - i'm not, more so a hyper hyper niche one). If not for the leap of faith that I took back then, I doubt i'd have as strong of a production team as I do now (shoutout Gabby and Chase as well for joining in super easily). From viewers to friends to part of the team and personally invested in the success of our channels - it's a pretty cool story. Even the ones that aren't beholden to contributing are capable and willing. I love and appreciate them all. I didn't really have a point in writing all this just thought this tweet was a cool prompt and wanted to share my story. Content creation can be a super lonely and isolating thing but I'm thankful I maintained online friendships for as long as I have for both my work and personal life. And to think, it all started with Among Us and Starcraft 2.
