Dit is Hamidreza Afrideh, een Iraanse componist en kamancheh-speler, zittend op de ruïnes van zijn muziekschool (Honiak) in Teheran. My mom just called me from Iran through her landline. I haven’t spoken to her since February. She said that Israel and the US are bombing the regime nonstop. They taped all the windows because the building shakes constantly. I asked if any civilians are getting hurt, and she replied “No, No, No. No normal civilians are getting hurt” Everyone is hanging in there and counting the days for this regime to end and for the return of the Shah. 🇮🇷

De ontwikkelingen in Iran volgen elkaar in razend tempo op. Er zijn grote zorgen over de bombardementen die plaatsvinden. Contact leggen met familie en vrienden in het land is bijna niet mogelijk. Daardoor leeft de Iraanse gemeenschap in Nederland momenteel tussen hoop en vrees. Zeker omdat onzeker is wanneer de bombardementen stoppen en je bedenkt waartoe het Iraanse regime in staat is. Vanochtend ontving ik een aantal mensen uit de Iraanse gemeenschap om van hen te horen hoe zij naar de situatie in het land kijken en welke impact dit op henzelf en hun omgeving heeft. Dat maakte diepe indruk op mij. Wat overduidelijk doorklonk in dit gesprek was hoe ongelooflijk sterk het Iraanse volk is. Ik heb toegezegd dat Nederland hen niet uit het oog verliest en we met onze partners blijven inzetten op de-escalatie en druk op het Iraanse regime. Eén ding is helder: Uiteindelijk kunnen alleen de Iraniërs de toekomst van hun land bepalen. Nederland staat pal achter het Iraanse volk. En ik hoop van harte dat zij snel weer fatsoenlijk contact kunnen krijgen met hun geliefden.

Berichten die mij via netwerken van 7-Aban Front bereiken, geven een onthutsend beeld van de troepen van islamitische republiek. Uit angst voor bombardementen hebben hun Gardisten, politie, militie en anderen in bussen, personenauto’s of zelf op straten van Teheran gestationeerd: “Ze lijken verward en verbijsterd. Alsof ze verdwaald zijn. En de burgers zijn doodsbang voor ze. Iedereen wacht op de finale strijd.”

De NPO gaat nog een slag verder en noemt de terreur groepen "projecten" om Iran te verdedigen. Och die bejaarde "zielige" man met dat brilletje werd zomaar vermoord. As an Iranian living inside my country during war, I will say this plainly. The chance of me being killed by masked, armed men roaming the streets, or by gunmen standing on mosque rooftops behind machine guns, is far greater than the chance of dying in an airstrike. Weirdly, Iranian embassy in Pretoria notified us, Ukrainian diplomats, about opening a book of condolences in memory of ayatollah Khamenei and the military leadership of Iran. I decided to respond - and do it in a public way. The letter explains why. Your Excellency, Mr. Ambassador,   Since you notified the Embassy of Ukraine of the book of condolences for deceased Ayatollah Khamenei and Iran’s military leadership, I feel compelled to remind you the following.   As military allies of the Russian Federation, the deceased leaders of Iran had on their hands the blood of thousands of Ukrainian citizens – men and women, children and elderly – killed with the help of the infamous Iran-made “Shahed” drones and other military know-how so eagerly provided to Russia by your government. Your leaders were complicit in bringing endless grief to Ukrainian civilians.   Being a person of faith, I try not to rejoice in the death of other people, even those who chose to be tormentors of my country that did nothing bad to theirs. But as someone who has spent three years to the tune of Iran-created machines of death howling every night in the sky over Kyiv and other peaceful Ukrainian cities, I cannot help but wish for every culprit to meet the justice they deserve. Over de intimidaties van dissidenten en diaspora wereldwijd. Mijn vermoorde familieleden, en de vele andere slachtoffers, draaien zich om in hun graf.

Update #IranProtesten (306): Ik heb zojuist heel kort met een familielid in Teheran gesproken. Hij vertelde dat het regime, ondanks de dood van Khamenei en veel van zijn kopstukken, en de vernietiging van veel bases van de Revolutionaire Garde, nog steeds de controle over Teheran behoudt. De Basij-milities van het regime zijn actief aanwezig op motorfietsen in de straten. Hij voegde eraan toe dat de meeste straten er verlaten uitzien omdat veel mensen de stad hebben verlaten of thuisblijven, omdat ze zich daar veiliger voelen dan op straat. You don't get to narrate my story, you don't get to claim moral superiority. You don't get to tell me my feelings are wrong. Is it legal to throw women in prison for strands of hair? Is it legal to mass execute people? Is it legal to turn a fertile land into a parched desert? Is it legal to rape? Is it legal to shoot innocent people? Is it legal to kill children? Is it legal to torture people to death? Is it legal to spread terrorism? Is it legal to deprive people of a livelihood? Is it legal to shoot people in the eye to blind them? Is it legal to silence people and take away all of their human rights? Is it legal to shoot down a passenger plane? Is it legal to drive millions to leave their country? Is it legal to jail women for singing and dancing? Is it legal to disappear people including children? You will never experience anything like Iranians have experienced for the last 47 years. Iranians have fought barehanded and they've paid a price. All up to 1,000,000 (one million) Iranians have been murdered since the regime came to power. Your books on 'civil disobedience' and 'collective protest' are useless against an armed opposition that is ideologically driven and will kill all that stand in its way. You want legality? The world has a duty to protect innocent lives. It's enshrined in R2P. Some people seem to think Iranians aren't humans. The murder, genocide and massacre of Iranians receives scant media attention - hence scant sympathy. Those who proclaim to care about 'human rights' must think Iranians are animals and not worthy. Their hatred of Israel and US is so great they've lost all perspective. Yes, Iranians are happy. They're happy someone took out Ali Khamenei and many others directly responsible for so much pain and agony. And you know what? We're unashamedly hopeful that with the help of the world's superpower, we can reclaim our country and build a better tomorrow. We know there's a long way to go, but give us this brief moment of reprieve, because daily we sit and try to tell the story of the lives lost, those at risk of execution, those under torture. We've seen the pictures and videos of massacres taking place. Our dance and happiness comes with a heavy weight. We do so, in knowledge of the many who never lived to see this day. As a Gazan citizen who has lived most of his life in Gaza, the Iranian regime did not support building a school, or establishing a hospital, or treating a child, or educating a teenager! It did not support our right to live, but rather devoted all means to enable certain parties to oppress their people, while chanting mob-like slogans. Why should I sympathize with this regime?
