New observations of 2024 YR4 have enabled planetary defense experts to refine the asteroid's chance of impact in 2032. As nightly observations continue, the impact probability will continue to be updated. Learn more: go.nasa.gov/3I0ZA7K

Not all asteroids are what they seem! NASA just discovered 7 more "dark comets"—stealthy objects that look like asteroids but act like comets. In a new study, scientists discovered there are two types of these weird cosmic rocks: go.nasa.gov/4f9zNZl

Excited to share our story about the truly unique, unweathered, and humble #Ischgl #meteorite, the 3rd ever recorded case in history with a linked trajectory and orbit! Meteorites don't just fall from the sky; they can also be brought by snow avalanches: doi.org/10.1111/maps.1…

🌠 Fireball update! It appears that this object was a small piece of a comet. We estimate that it flew over Spain and Portugal travelling at ~45 km/s before burning up over the Atlantic Ocean at an altitude of ~60 km. The likelihood of any meteorites being found is very low.

☄️😍 ESA’s fireball camera in Cáceres, Spain, spotted this stunning meteor last night! Our Planetary Defence Office are currently analysing the size and trajectory of the object to assess the chance that any material made it to the surface. Credit: ESA/PDO/AMS82 - AllSky7

Awesome fireball! A recently published paper touches on how non-fragmenting vs fragmenting meteoroids might appear as seen by casual observers & cameras (top). This fireball is a perfect example of the scenario on the right. arxiv.org/abs/2405.04127

What a beautiful event! The meteor light display can tell us about the flight characteristics and shock types - the thin light streak comes from the cylindrical line source, while flashes come from fragmentation episodes. This event has it all in one package.

A dramatic freball was widely observed and filmed over Spain and Portugal last night (May 19, 2024, 22h50 UT)! More information to come soon on the IMO website...

A @NASA system that monitors potential asteroid impacts successfully predicted the impact of a very small asteroid over Germany this weekend. It gave advance warning as to where and when the asteroid would impact, a critical planetary defense capability. go.nasa.gov/3HwxVeV

Euler introduced many symbols and notations that are still in use today, such as i for the imaginary unit, and f(x) for a function of x.
