@DPJHodges We do really need a transition period. Even something like a week where you can go make the cabinet announcements and everyone is ready to go on day one.

Logjam inside No.10 underlines what I wrote yesterday. There are clearly ongoing issues with basic political management. Not a deal breaker at the moment. Will no doubt be ironed out moving forward. But further evidence of the fact this transition has come too soon.

💥Will Rachel Reeves be Andy Burnham's surprise appointment as Defence secretary tomorrow? Here is my reasoning: - the role of Defence secretary is increasingly about spending public money efficiently and not wasting it; - she can lobby for/find savings for the £5billion black hole in the Defence Investment Plan; - Reeves briefed journalists on the DIP when they went to the Nato summit in Ankara with Sir Keir Starmer; - Reeves was at the unveiling of the DIP with Starmer and defence secretary Dan Jarvis; - Defence secretary would be seen as an appropriate role for a former Chancellor to rebuild her reputation. We will know soon enough tomorrow. More news and coverage now on @GBNEWS.

LATEST New Prime Minister Andy Burnham's Cabinet reshuffle will start tomorrow afternoon. No announcements are due today, I am told, and there is no comment on speculation. So ... here is what I think could happen. It sounds like Lord Hermer, Steve Reed, Liz Kendall, Emma Reynolds and Peter Kyle are among those leaving Government. They will be told first tomorrow afternoon. Then the appointments start. Best guesses are Shabana Mahmood (Chancellor), Lucy Powell (DPM and Local Government), Louise Haigh (Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster), Angela Rayner (Health), Jonathan Reynolds (Business), Anneliese Midgley (Chief Whip) and Pat McFadden (staying at Work and Pensions). It's not clear what is happening to David Lammy or Rachel Reeves. One idea - why not put Reeves in defence? She was at the unveiling of the Defence Investment Plan and will be best placed to lobby for the extra £5billion needed for it. All of this could change if some ministers refuse to move. Tune in to all of the political drama from dawn to dusk tomorrow with me and my colleagues on @GBNEWS.

@eightgalaxies @GBPolitcs You are dumb. If we have nationalised drilling, it will stop supply issues, allow us to make our own prices. The international market is for import/export… you don’t have to pay a premium for your own oil you just produced! It will help us in the long run without a doubt

Andy Burnham says he wants to end the 'insidious briefing culture' and 'move beyond' factionalism 'I will work relentlessly to build a culture of one Labour team. Change starts with us. We won't beat Britain's new right if we are consumed by infighting and pulling in different directions. 'Fighting to eradicate it and the insidious briefing culture that goes with it will characterise my leadership. In future when a Burnhamite walks into a bar I want the barman to say great to see you. We don't like factional politics in here' He insists he has not made any decisions about who will be in his top team. 'When I have you will see it reflects all parts of our party. All communities'

This is a very interesting observation on the UK from a significant Silicon Valley tech CEO… There’s the specific issue about the accuracy of stats… in this case potentially understating some better economic news There’s a more general separate issue in economics about the timeliness of official economic numbers compared with the real time mountain of rich data being processed by tech companies. Worth a read.
Patrick Collison@patrickc

It's been interesting and puzzling to witness the problems with accuracy in UK economic statistics over the past few years. (See the links in the next tweet for more.) It seems that the Office for National Statistics, ONS, now struggles to effectively measure basic figures such as employment, trade, and inflation. This resulted in a quite scathing government report published last summer, where Robert Devereux, a former permanent secretary, concluded that "most of the well-publicised problems with core economic statistics are the consequence of ONS’s own performance." There's a lot of discussion about the travails facing the UK these days (including this big piece in The Atlantic a few weeks ago[1]), and the problems with the ONS feel like an unsettling microcosm of diffuse decline in broader institutional competence. Anyhow: at Stripe, we became curious about the UK's published entrepreneurship data. While we observe a boom in many parts of the world, official figures don't show a similar increase in the UK. In the latest Stripe Economics post, we dug into the data, and, as far as we can tell, the official figures are probably misleading. The good and the bad news (mostly good, I think!) is that the UK is almost certainly witnessing an unmeasured boom in entrepreneurship: stripeeconomics.com/p/is-the-uk-mi… UK-specific issues aside, I suspect that this measurement question is illustrative of forthcoming econometric challenges. Keeping the world's macro indicators up-to-date in response to the faster-than-usual changes wrought by AI will be both increasingly difficult and increasingly important in the coming years. This raises serious questions for Cloud 9 management. Channel 5 says that it contacted her agent on Wednesday lunchtime after Ann was unreachable. But she was not discovered until Thursday lunchtime when a carer visited the property. Did her agent check on her after being warned? And if so, why did they not alert police when she was uncontactable?
