@uthmanzi You can find it hard to believe but there is someone who instigated the whole discussion by saying he did exactly that… Learning how to raise a dog taught him to stop hitting his own young children that were alive before he learned how to love a dog.

@funkomi I find it hard to believe that people who get education on how to raise a dog are the same type of people that will randomly have a kid. Conscientiousness in one area usually transfers to other areas.

I find it so #fascinating that someone would educate themselves on how to raise a dog before getting one but just go ahead and have kids without thinking similar learning is required to the point they end up applying dog rearing methodologies to their kids.

B4 I got a dog three years ago, I read a book on how to raise one. The core idea was simple: positive reinforcement, and correction without frustration. I spent the next 14 months training that dog. I applied the same approach to my two boys, who were toddlers at the time.

If you’re planning to be a parent, please read: - Creating Love: A new way of understanding our most important relationship by John Bradshaw. - Hold on to your kids by Gordon Neufeld. - The art of loving by Erich Fromm, Must-reads.

The Whole Brain child is a good one thats more about cognitive development linked to behaviour. A new one thats good is also Good Insidel by Becky Kennedy and then generally I just read studies on topics of interest like the impact of hitting kids on behavioural outcomes / how to develop curiosity in kids - the Nature Reviews study (2024) is great for this. I started The Anxious Generation but I honestly haven’t finished it. But people recommend it a lot. As a Christian, I get the ideas but I find a lot of the anti-anxiety stuff can be found in the bible.

Something I realized when I became a parent is there's a window of time when your parents are healthy, your kids are little, and everyone gets to experience multiple generations of family spending time together. Cherish this time and don’t take a single moment of it for granted.

@Kollerkunzultz Its fascinating to me because I did not ever see parenting as pure improvisation. Once I started my parenting journey mothers shared excellent literature and studies on raising children. I continue to study how to raise children. But its v interesting how people approach it.

@funkomi This is the part nobody wants to sit with. We accept training for dogs, licenses for driving, certifications for jobs ,but parenting, the hardest job on earth, is pure improvisation. I studied because I refuse to improvise on human beings, and principles can be transferred

@th3_868 I’m older than you. Life is way too short to spend it willfully suffering. But yes, hard agree on finding a way out of a toxic environment.

I’d say try meatballs, but even meatballs are like £5 ( at W*itrose anyways) 😅

@daisyossai_ Yes, I remember when Salmon was more of a luxury. I’m here thinking why did I even offer this boy the option of a steak dinner

My rule for luxuries is that we can only go ahead with it if we have found a way to generate the extra expenditure outside of our day jobs. Things like nice handbags, shoes, cars and luxury holidays need to be from some sort of return on a separate investment/engagement/sale.
