@SeanCasten Presidents have long claimed authority to take limited military action without prior approval. From Jefferson fighting the Barbary pirates to Clinton in Kosovo to Obama in Libya, this isn’t new.

This is not about the merits of Iran’s nuclear program. No president has the authority to bomb another country that does not pose an imminent threat to the US without the approval of Congress. This is an unambiguous impeachable offense.

China’s priority is itself, and building ties with the Global South of which it is part. Economic war has devastated US influence. In China, I took part in daily meetings, exchanges and dialogues with scholars, practitioners, and journalists from a range of institutions. It was clear not only that there is robust criticism of policies at all levels, but also that the scope and breadth of these debates and disagreements is greater there than it is in the West. It is impossible to build a society as dynamic, stable and fast-moving as China’s without rigorous dialogue at all levels of society. Of course, what Westerners demand when they speak of “dissent” is support for the overthrow of the state and its recolonisation by imperialism. They might be disappointed to learn that the Chinese people overwhelmingly support the Party.
