The government's worst-of-all-worlds policy of allowing unlimited, unchecked immigration into the UK via flimsy rafts is going to result in a terrible tragedy. Either a large number of people will die at sea, or a there'll a terrorist incident on a scale never before seen.

@GSpellchecker I think this could probably have been easily resolved if only 1 person has gone to the house (instead of 4 all yelling at once), explained that their mother has a health condition, and asked if they could kindly leave the space free in front of her house whenever possible.

You'd be amazed how many endless feuds this causes with neighbours in Britain. There are two types of people. Those who just park where there is space. And those that think they own the bit of public road closest to their house and make life hell for everyone else.

@LauraTrottMP Don't just blame Labour. The Batley school incident happened under the Conservative government, and the entire leadership of the Tory government and almost all Tory MPs remained silent and did nothing to help the teacher or condemn the hate mob.

Five years ago, hundreds of Islamists protested at the gates of Batley Grammar School all because a teacher showed a cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad during a Religious Education lesson. Within days, he was forced into hiding. Threatened with death. His family targeted and children forced to miss school. Five years on. He is STILL in hiding. Still living in fear. In Britain. And what’s changed? Instead of defending free speech, Labour are now debating new definitions of “anti-Muslim hostility” and appointing a tsar to police it. This amounts to blasphemy law by the back door and it will have a significant and chilling effect on how people live. Labour councils in the north of England have issued advice to teachers warning that children’s drawings may be deemed “idolatrous” under sharia law. That music and dance lessons might breach religious expectations. Teachers are effectively being told to be careful. Children risk being labelled blasphemous for drawing a nativity scene.
No religion should be above the law. No belief should be beyond criticism. The Batley teacher was cleared of any wrongdoing and an independent report said he was badly let down. But it didn’t matter. His life was already torn apart. His children forced out of school. His family still in hiding. So ask yourself, if this happened again today, would anything be different? Or would we fail him all over again? We must stand up for our teachers.
We must defend children.
We must say no to extremism and no to blasphemy laws in Britain. We MUST fight for free speech.

@michaelshermer Intelligent species capable of technological advancement would have to have a tool-making capability and be adaptable to living and working in different environments. Bipedal primates with opposable thumbs are well-adapted for this in a way that dolphins and dogs aren't.

@henrywinter Why do you sports journos always feel the need to whip up a lot of misery, bitterness and depression around the England squad before every major tournament? Why can't we just go into the tournament full of positivity and support for the team and enjoy it for as long as it lasts?

Mood amongst some England fans is that Ben White didn’t deserve a recall after his self-imposed exile. “Mostly (the mood is) that he shouldn’t be in the squad. He’s made his bed…” says one top-capper. #ENG 1/2

@Alonso_GD Being "radicalised" would be to do something like belong to an ideology or culture that treats women like 3rd class citizens and forces children to marry their cousins. Objecting to such an ideology or culture is to be completely normal and civilised.

@Stephenmevans1 @soniasodha Does indoctrinating children into Islam (combined with a apostasy law meaning they can never leave), forcing women to cover their faces, and forcing young men and women to marry their cousins fall under Islam or Islamism?

Good piece from @soniasodha. So often, debate around Islam is polarised between demonisation of Muslims and attempts to shut down any criticism. We need space for an honest, open conversation about a religion with increasing influence on the country's social and political life.
Sonia Sodha@soniasodha

I've written for today's Times on how both right and left have got it wrong on Islam. The right conflates Islam with Islamism to turn British Muslims into a lightening rod. The left is in denial that there are any issues at all with our multicultural society. (🔗 up next)

I would note again that Ukrainians abroad are not burning down Russian cultural centers or Russian schools worldwide. Even though they certainly have plenty of reasons to do so. But “anti-Zionists” (sic!) burning ambulances in London just because they have a Star of David on it – that’s always on the table. That’s why I don’t believe in any “anti-Zionism.” It’s simply antisemitism that has once again become acceptable. I myself, to put it mildly, am not thrilled with Israel’s policies in recent times. And many people aren’t thrilled with U.S. policies either. So what – are people burning anything American in Europe? Not really.

@adamsummerton If we have learned one thing about Tuchel, it's that he is not going to put players in the England squad just because they are considered stars. Tuchel is building a squad to play a certain way. TAA is very talented but his style would require the whole team to play differently.

There’s not a single other nation in the world that wouldn’t have him a squad of 35. One of England’s most technically gifted players and a proven winner at the highest levels of the club game, who’s in his prime years (27). Madness

Trent Alexander-Arnold hasn’t been called up for England’s upcoming friendlies… Despite Reece James being injured, Kyle Walker and Kieran Trippier retiring internationally, and Jarell Quansah withdrawing from the squad.

@mart_brooks @GSpellchecker Thanks for the link. I can't see anything on the site that even describes the service as being "Jewish". In what way is it a Jewish ambulance service if anyone can work for them and they will serve anyone?

@conncarroll She's also completely wrong to state that polygyny is now considered socially acceptable - isn't she?

Conn Carroll@conncarroll·
This is actually mostly wrong. Our species norm is not polygyny. We are not gorillas. Yes, 80% of cultures are polygamous, but polygamy only spread after agriculture. The hunter-gatherer bands we spent hundreds of thousands of years in before that were monogamous. Also, Christianity did not inherit monogamy from Rome. It is true that Roman wives were expected to be monogamous, but Roman husbands could, and were even expected to, have sex with courtesans, concubines, prostitutes, and slaves. Christian monogamy was a sharp break, a true sexual revolution, away from the norm of powerful men monopolizing women. Now Louise Perry is correct that “lifting the monogamous restriction produces worse outcomes.” Monogamy is far better for society than polygamy. But that is because monogamy is our natural state, it was just corrupted for centuries after the dawn of agriculture. We are a species designed to form pair bonds and raise families together. Now there are tons of things in the modern world that are making it harder and harder to do that, but that is our natural state and we should fight to return to it.
Camus@newstart_2024

Our species norm is polygyny: 80% of cultures historically let high-status men hoard wives while low-status men get nothing. Christianity (inherited from Rome) forced monogamy for 2000 years. Now we've mostly ditched it—and we're sliding back toward the old pattern. Louise Perry: Lifting the monogamous restriction produces worse outcomes—higher crime, domestic violence, economic inequality. Monogamy is better for women and low-status men. Monogamy isn't "natural"—it's an engineered cultural upgrade that tamed inequality and violence. Do you think monogamy is worth defending even if it's not the "default" human pattern? Or are we better off returning to the species norm? Your take 👇

@argyriou15 @theiaincameron True, but it's more about climate associated with the latitude than number of potential hours of sunshine. Much of USA is on a par with the Mediterranean and North Africa.

As someone who lives in the 1200-1600 hours zone in the UK, I'm astonished at how much sun the south-west Unites States gets. I considered 2025 as a lovely summer in central Scotland, but we're sunshine peasants compared to some places.

@mehdirhasan Is the fact that Muslim’s are a racial minority in the West the reason why they force their daughters to marry their cousins, or why they put a bag over their wives’ heads?
