It's better to requeen with good quality known genetics: i.e. excellent layer, hygienic behaviour, disease resistance, calm disposition, less likely to swarm etc... When a beekeeper wants to requeen they will leave a hive queenless for around 1 to 2 weeks and then check and remove any fresh queen cells then introduce the new queen in a small cage with some attendant bees. The new queen remains in the cage for a few days after which the hive will have, hopefully, got used to her pheromones and accept her.

Queen bee colour is specific to the year in a 5 year cycle. Last digit of the year: 0/5=Blue, 1/6=White, 2/7=Yellow, 3/8=Red, 4/9=Green. Queens live for 5 years maximum, but are only commercially viable for 1 to 3 years. The colours help keep a track on the age if the queen when to requeen the hive.
