Proud to be backing Brian and the entire @oatsovernight team! One of the keys to @oatsovernight success has been their data-driven approach. The team has formed an incredible feedback loop over the years: soft-launching new flavors every month within their 100,000+ active subscriber base, digesting community feedback, making a few small tweaks and bringing only the best flavors to market. I never thought oatmeal could taste so good… Excited for what’s to come! prnewswire.com/news-releases/…

“Wednesday’s downgrades come as the city prepares to solicit bond investors next month for more than $500 million to cover back pay.” We are borrowing, after multiple credit downgrades and thus spiked borrowing costs, to pay back old debts. This is one of the most absurdist and depressing comments about municipal finance that any of us will probably ever read in our entire lives. Like opening one credit card to pay off another. Brandon Johnson doesn’t just belong out of a job next year. He deserves a lifelong of shame and humiliation for the damage he has caused Chicago. 🚨NEW EPISODE Is Chicago trapped in a death spiral—or is it actually massively undervalued? We sat down with investor @StuLoren on the latest Illinois Policy Podcast to crunch the numbers on Chicago's economy. His findings are striking: The average Chicago worker is 10% poorer than 5 years ago The city is growing at a fraction of Austin and Nashville's rate ...But Chicago's "stock price" might be perfect for certain investors. We also cover: ✅the reality of the city's pension crisis ✅crime and public safety by the numbers ✅ @ChicagoBears stadium standoff ✅the crisis at @ChiPubSchools

Top 5 steps Chicago’s next mayor can take to fix city finances ⬇️ 1. Stop digging the hole deeper: No more pension sweeteners. 2. Advocate for allowing Chapter 9 bankruptcy: Chicago is the only big city without this tool. You don’t have to advocate for entering bankruptcy. But having the option gives you leverage in negotiations. 3. More financial oversight: Create an independent budget office. Fill the city administrator vacancy. Get a real elected CFO a la NYC, LA and Houston. And put it all in a city charter. 4. Empower voters to approve tax hikes and new debt. 5. Implement 100% of the recommendations in last year’s EY report.
Austin Berg@Austin__Berg

NEW: Chicago’s greatest challenge is not a lack of natural resources. Nor top-tier universities. Nor basic infrastructure. It is the compounded effect of decades of poor financial decisions. Here are the top five steps Chicago's next mayor can take to fix city finances ⬇️ thelastward.org/p/5-steps-chic…

This is wrong. Hardworking people (including US citizens) in Little Village are being apprehended by ICE while grocery shopping & doing laundry. This is not going after the "worst of the worst". Going after the worst of the worst, means NOT going after the hard-working contributor. Little Village is filled with good families & hard workers who contribute to our city & state’s economy. The Little Village economic corridor is home to 1,800 businesses that sustain 30,000 jobs. Terrifying residents into closing businesses & staying in their homes will further harm our economy and moral compass. Closed businesses and terrified residents do not make our country safer. In fact, the opposite is true.
Laura N. Rodríguez Presa@LAURA_N_ROD

Developing: At least five people, including vendors and a man doing laundry, were taken during a Border Patrol raid led by Gregory Bovino in Little Village. Little Village, known as the ‘Mexico of the Midwest,’ is the second-highest grossing shopping district in Chicago.

Agreed. Moody’s Ratings stopped short of another downgrade for the city of Chicago, just changing its “outlook” for the city’s finances from “positive” to “stable.” That’s still a major red flag that the city needs to get its financial act in order. All of us all over the state of Illinois need to worry about the financial health of the state’s economic engine.
Bill Conway 🇺🇸@NewDayConway

This didn’t get enough coverage, but on Friday @moodysratings revised Chicago’s credit outlook downward. Our credit rating didn’t fall, but the financial picture is getting harder. Here’s what it means for taxpayers 👇 🧵

This is absurd! Thanks to @nbcchicago & @RaymondALopez for investigating. An elderly widow is fighting a $233,439.90 water bill for a vacant home after the City installed a meter without her authorization! Even after admitting the meter was faulty, the City is now threatening not only her pension as a former city worker, but also the pensions of her two daughters — both retired Chicago police officers. How many more families are being crushed by this kind of mismanagement? I suspect this isn't a one-off but a bigger problem that needs to be fixed. HAVE YOU EVER BEEN AFFECTED BY FAULTY WATER METER BILLING? If so, share your story in my comments section. I'm listening.

It cannot be understated what an absolutely catastrophic decision our derelict Governor has just made. $11B added to the $36B, with one signature. All the effort and sacrifice we have made to shore up our pensions over the past 15 years, all of the tax increases, all of the deteriorating services we’ve had to endure have been for naught. We were already in the worst financial situation we have ever been in as a city with CPS, CTA, and the city budget multiple billions in the red just for this year alone. This is just the beginning. Every other union representing Tier 2 workers will demand the same sweetener. There is no coming back from this decision - Illinois is certain to become a failed state that exists solely to pay retirement benefits. If you thought our taxes are already high, just wait - Chicago will tax everyone and everything to the degree that we will be forced to eat the seed corn… and it will still not be enough. JB has sealed our fate. Nothing else that @GovPritzker does matters. This decision ensures that he is worst the Governor this state has ever seen.

Taiwan is a major trading partner for IL & what really stands out during my visit here is their amazing transit system. Trains are spotless, safe & EXACTLY on time. It’s efficient & trusted by millions every day. Chicago can get here. Reliable public transit should be a top priority of a thriving city.

Common VC advice: 'you need to have unique insight in a market, because founders want to work with people who share their view of the world' I've always seen it a bit differently. Our job isn't to out-insight the founder, but convince them that we can *enable* said insight in a rapid manner If you truly have a great insight to build a company, you should just go build that yourself (esp. today)! Otherwise, you're better off finding insights to do your job better...
