Delighted to attend @NPWSIreland Leaders' Forum to #RestoreNature this week along with a mighty team of SWAN members. Commitment of staff, participants & Chair inspires confidence in a positive process & hope for a strong Nature Restoration Plan. River restoration will be key.

Good to see a drop in river nitrogen levels in '24 but in South & South East it’s still WAY above what’s needed for good river water quality. These areas have the highest levels of intensive / derogation dairy farms. ➕ no info on the cause of the drop rte.ie/news/ireland/2…

Putting this out today as don't want to dampen the parade on Monday. We need to look after this beautiful country we have and the wonderful lakes that are so important to our heritage. We'll have much more to celebrate if we do. 🎉☘️🐟 #StPatricksDay #RestoreOurWaters

Nothing to see here, just RPS consultants pointing out that the measures proposed to protect our water quality from agriculture in the Nitrates Action Programme have NO EVIDENCE that they'll work to fix water quality. Saying the quiet part out loud.

This is a really useful tool for asking election candidate to prioritise water quality. Species or faeces? I know which one most election candidates are talking more of.
Sustainable Water Network (SWAN)@swanireland

There's been plenty of talk from candidates in #GE24 on what they'll do to stop water pollution BUT will they commit to the tough changes that are really needed and save our water species OR are they talking more faeces? Email them to find out👇

Where is sewage not being treated properly? 👀The Urban Wastewater Treatment report shows the number of towns & villages discharging raw sewage every day has reduced from 29 to 16 since the start of 2023. But more work is needed to protect the environment: bit.ly/4exJbqe

The sale of lands adjacent to the Glen of the Downs nature reserve presents a once in a life time opportunity for the State to double one of Ireland's most important Old Oak Woodlands. What better way to kickstart 🇮🇪Nature Restoration Plan #RestoreNature rte.ie/news/leinster/…

Amidst all the talk & political promises about retaining the derogation- this is a critical point, one that I have been highlighting for years, to little avail. Quite simply, there is no evidence the measures being put in place will work. You want results? Follow the science.
Irish Farmers Journal@farmersjournal

There is “no clear evidence” environmental measures currently in place on farms will achieve the necessary outcomes, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has said. eu1.hubs.ly/H0cQmyX0

Mapped: Inside Ireland’s Powerful Farming Lobby scq.io/GtMchTM via @DeSmog In the chilled section of any major supermarket, from London to Lagos, you’re likely to find a taste of Ireland – a stick of premium butter wrapped in gold or green packaging, celebrating a superior product from grass-fed pastures. But the gleaming image of Ireland’s agri-produce hides a number of inconvenient truths, among them the damage the sector is wreaking on Ireland’s climate targets, as well as its waterways and soils.

Tenfold increase in farm inspections needed by some councils to meet '24 targets New targets still amount to less than 4% of the total slurry farms. “at such a paltry inspection rate they’re just not going to inspect the no. of farms that need to be” 👇 thejournal.ie/up-manure-cree…
