@PeteButtigieg Good afternoon, Chicago. If America’s trains were 10% as beautiful as its train stations are they’d be gorgeous. Also, there must be about 200 Amish people all in separate groups in this hall waiting to board trains.

This is a live thread about about attempting to travel from Washington DC to Chicago with my family by train. It was entirely my idea. I insisted on it. My family is not happy.

Big Mike’s – A Closing Note Sunday was our last service at Big Mike’s This is one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to write. It feels like failure, but it isn’t. We’re proud of what we achieved, we shot for the stars, poured everything into it — heart, soul, sweat, tears, life savings, even the house deposit — but the brutal truth is the maths just don’t math anymore. The industry is facing unsurmountable challenges. We gave it our very best I’m proud of my team, grateful to our guests, suppliers and FWBs all of whom have been incredibly understanding. My final act as gaffer is to go to bat for my staff so they land safely in new homes and ensure they are fully supported. Many of them have been with me a long time and I’m determined to assist them moving forward. Still a lot of options for potential storm Monday but most models have nothing too serious, apart from UKMO model which is out on its own with a nasty storm. Best case scenario is some wet and windy weather Monday that clears quickly 🤞

@TheRestHistory Only got to listen to your coverage of the Irish war of independence and civil war. Absolutely amazing. I really wish this had been available when I was studying history for my Leaving Cert a gazillion years ago!! (Although I had a brilliant teacher so fared well anyway 😉)

@sophiegrenham Totally not surprised but I think it's fair. I can't stand people who bring oversize bags and then feign ignorance or else practically knock other people down to get the bulk of space in the overhead locker. Drives me nuts!!

Apparently, Ryanair staff are paid commission for charging passengers for oversized bags. This shouldn't come as a surprise. Does anyone else habitually say "Never again!" after they've come off yet another delayed Ryanair flight and eventually cave when booking another one? ✈️

@bertsbooks I had to give up on this half way through which is fairly unusual for me. I just got bored! Our book club is picking books which are quite left field of our normal genre. Currently reading Project Hail Mary which has a LOT of maths/engineering speak in there!

Now that the temperature has dropped a little, we were able to put Butter back out on the table. It ended up being our first book of the day!

@bertsbooks I've given up on Butter. I rarely do it but was finding it very hard to keep going and my book club confirmed that the second half isn't any better. Starting Gabriel's Moon by one of my favourite authors William Boyd.

At 7.30pm, my dear Mother slipped away surrounded by her adored grandchildren, myself, her sister and niece, beads in hand, on the last bar of Faure’s In Paradissum, her parting gift to me in the compassionate care of the team at Kiltipper Woods Care Centre. A remarkable team 🙏

@saloreilly @killianbyrne I agree - if the ref panel just let the game play on I'd be interested to know what would have happened. It makes Ireland look like a laughing stock which is an awful shame for the sport.

@killianbyrne I think he could have made a stand too tbh.

The referee needs to take a hard look at himself, time people stood up to this nonsense!

@Killybegsgirl Unfortunately there's a market for this because many parents with young children don't appear to want to manage their behaviour in cafés and restaurants.

€15 for coffee in cafe that doesn’t allow children, so you can enjoy tranquility with your dog, no thank you! I remember as a child feeling being less than. Does that make sense? I just love children. Love dogs too. But I just think this concept is awful.
