@_postboomer @land_apostle I'd say the path towards NATO was only temporarily suspended by Yanukovich. But it would have been resumed by the opposition because it was part of their platform. It was a pendulum situation, ultimately Euromaidan & Yanukovich being ousted & Crimea invasion tipped the equilibrium

It's quite true that there was a lot of back and forth about it, but by 2010 it was considered a dead issue. Ukraine was no longer on the path to NATO membership, and most of the public also opposed it. On the other hand, Ukraine had been militarily aligned with the USA in other ways since independence, assisting in some of their wars.

@Wikush1 @Weeping_Sword No one is asking to forget, but to have a cool head and avoid bringing vengeance into EU foreign policy.East-EU states repeat "putin hague, russia partitioned"& as just as it sounds,is not a negotiating policy, but a recipe for an endless war. China&US profit, the EU pays.Enough!

@SirFrancis91 @Weeping_Sword I absolutely don't feel any connection to Ukraine, but the fact that the war is literally happening across the border from my country and that we're likely next in line is incredibly stressful. Besides, there's no way Poles will forget their history and accept Russia

Trying to cancel people for being xenophobic towards russians is so out of touch. Russia has been terrorising Poland, the whole Baltic region and our neighbors for years now. It takes 10 seconds to google why they are not beloved here.

@JohanSollgruber Nice! Can you explain us, why did the west/US/Nato not give Unterstützung with weapons and money to the brave Hungarians in 1956, or the Czech in 1968 (Dubcek govt) so that they could fight the soviets, bomb moscow and expel the enemies? Why wasn't that done back then?

@ShaneFromUSA @YourAnonCentral @IleFella Absolutely, Shane! She is also not afraid to make money with the bull, because she was happily taking part in the family business with russia till 2023, one year into the full scale war. But hey, she said "putin hague, russia partitioned" few times, I guess that cleans her sins

@msears1485 @PetriAspvik @mindbanx @kajakallas I see! There is a whole literature that discusses and explains the history and strategy of the time, and strategy of conflict management in general (the EU diplomats never red it). I really recommend to take a look! All the best

@SirFrancis91 @PetriAspvik @mindbanx @kajakallas I was 13 years old in 1956 when the Hungarian uprising was ruthlessly put down by Putin's predecessors. Believe it or not, none of the world leaders at the time asked for my views and didn't explain their actions and inactions to me. I'm more concerned about the current lunatics.

Claims that the Baltic States allow Ukraine to use their airspace are utter nonsense - and Russia knows it. Moscow’s threats against the Baltic States are not a sign of strength, but of weakness. Russia is failing on the battlefield in Ukraine and is trying to intimidate us into reducing our support for Ukraine. The right response is to do the opposite: increase our support to Ukraine and boost Europe’s defences even further.

@msears1485 @mindbanx @kajakallas Nice. But my question is, we are talking about a whole generation of diplomatic establishment. Why did they not help Hungary in 56, Prague in 68, Poland in 81 - multiple times?Do you think it was just "mistakes", one after another? Can it be they had a reason? Ever asked yourself?

@SirFrancis91 @mindbanx @kajakallas In every country there are people prepared to further a tyrant's aims. It was East Germans who fired upon those Berliners who attempted to scale the Berlin Wall. We can't change history. We can try to learn from the lessons from the past and improve the world of humans.

@NTenzer Do you think general Eisenhower had some "irrational fear" when he chose not to arm the hungarians in '56 against the soviets? L. Johnson in '68 too, "irrational fear"? Do you think Kennedy was a weak because of negotiating in the 62' Cuban Crisis? And who is brave, you & Kallas?

Exactement.

@DupinGrard1 So should we keep pushing for demands like "putin hague, russia partitioned"? If Ru deploys weapons of mass destruction what then, 21st sanctions package? Why are we even in this situation? Why didn't we corner the USSR in the cold war and force it to leave east.europe in the 50s?

Exactly. And I may add: 1. Do not give in to the temptation to engage in talks with Moscow; 2. Continue to drastically strengthen our sanctions and supply Ukraine with every possible weapon; 3. Develop a long-term strategy to defeat russia, even after its surrender in Ukraine.

@msears1485 @PetriAspvik @mindbanx @kajakallas Are you a bot, Martin? That has nothing to do with our discussion 😂 I am still waiting for the reply. Why did we not help the democratic uprisings in Hungary & Prague in the 50s and 60s against the soviet union, with weapons and $$?

@POLITICOEurope @kmathernova Why would they be against us? Even the Trump peace plan included provisions for govt-controlled Ukraine in the EU. And Finland survived the cold war without being part of either Nato or the Warsaw pact. With a very good ending. So, best case, Ukraine in the EU, worst case, neutral

Europe should see Ukraine as central to its future defense architecture, rather than as a burden, @kmathernova said. She warned that the alternative would be far more dangerous: “Look at the counterfactual. Imagine they’re not with us, but against us.” #GLOBSEC2026

@msears1485 @mindbanx @kajakallas That is absolutely false. People of those countries never allied themselves with russia! They were deprived of their democratic rights and forced to join the Warsaw pact, sometimes at gunpoint. A bit the risk of Ukraine since 2014. So, why did we not help in the 50s and 60s?

@SirFrancis91 @mindbanx @kajakallas I've already explained the situation that prevailed in the 1950s and '60s. Russia dominated the Warsaw Pact countries and people in those countries allied themselves with Russia. It was when the USSR collapsed that the Warsaw Pact countries broke free. They then joined NATO & EU.

@msears1485 @PetriAspvik @mindbanx @kajakallas True, Ukraine is fighting an existential war. There is not much parallel between the 30s.If there was,Ru would have completely occupied Moldova in 92' & Georgia in 2008 and Ukraine in 2014. His stance is more similar to the US in Chile&Cuba in the 60s than Germany in 1930s Europe

@SirFrancis91 @PetriAspvik @mindbanx @kajakallas If you are referring to Russia's invasions of Ukraine, Putin is trying to push water up hill. He doesn't accept that Ukraine is an independent country. Ukraine is fighting for its very existence. Appeasement in the 1930s didn't stop Hitler and appeasement won't stop Putin.

@NTenzer I will ask you too. In 1956, the brave Hungarians rose against soviet occupation, as Czechs in '68. Why do you think the US/Nato establishment did not finance the Hungarians/Czechs nor supply them with weapons to shoot at soviets and at moscow? And what would you have done?

The increasingly erratic threats coming from Moscow these days are a sign of fear and desperation — and proof that our policy is working. Europe must stay calm, united, and continue supporting Ukraine.

@MajorPriapus @mhmck Its offensive to mix victims and aggressors in this way. If there was justice, putin would sit in the hague with netanyahu, both to answer for crimes against humanity (and netanyahu for using starvation of civilians as a method of conducting warfare). Shame on you!

Russian barbarians invaded Europe in Ukraine 12 years, 3 months ago. In all the time since, Ukraine has been the only nation-state in combat with the aggressors. Paralyzed by institutional cowardice, other nations can’t decide if Western civilization is worth defending.
