I would be terrified if I were a Springboks fan after watching France vs Spain today. History tells us one thing: being the favourite is often the hardest position to be in at a Rugby World Cup. South Africa has never won a RWC when they were the favourites. In 1995, the All Blacks were the overwhelming favourites. South Africa shocked the world. In 2007, most people had New Zealand as the team to beat or England to retain the trophy. South Africa quietly went about its business and lifted the Webb Ellis Cup. In 2019, after losing to the All Blacks in the pool stage, almost nobody believed the Springboks could become world champions. It was supposed to be New Zealand’s World Cup. Instead, South Africa had the last laugh. In 2023, the script was already written. France or Ireland were destined to win it. Many expected a France vs Ireland final. South Africa wasn’t the favourite but once again, they found a way. Now, for the first time in their history, everything is different. No matter what happens over the next two years, the Springboks are on track to arrive at the 2027 Rugby World Cup as the clear favourites. That’s a position they’ve never had to carry before. The target is on their backs. Every nation will spend the next two years studying them, chasing them, and measuring themselves against them. Winning as the underdog is one thing. Winning when the entire rugby world expects you to lift the trophy is something else entirely. Can the Springboks handle that weight? History suggests it’s their biggest challenge yet. 👀 #Springboks #Rugby
