Some five years ago we were told that China was to dominate the global economy, overtaking the American GDP in size in a not too distant future. Since then, China's share of global GDP has decreased while the US share has increased.

This stands in stark contrast to Sophie Cunningham’s unapologetic defense of sex-based categories which is completely aligned with biological reality. I was “black” when I read The Odyssey in high school... ...but somehow I never imagined the characters as looking like me. Why? Because they were GREEK characters. I didn’t need Odysseus to look like me to appreciate his story. I didn’t need Helen of Troy to look like me to understand her importance. They were Greek characters from a specific culture, with a specific history. And this is what Hollywood keeps getting wrong. We don’t identify with characters because they look like us. We connect with them because we recognize something human in them - their struggles, their courage, their flaws, their values. Odysseus is a GREEK hero. Helen of Troy is a GREEK woman. Their identities are part of what makes their stories meaningful. Casting Colombians and Africans and Indians as Greek ISN'T "representation." It’s just insulting. Stop it.

In recent years, much has been said about the rise of the far right in Japanese society. Yet at least in the rural community where I grew up, many adults had long embraced ultranationalist ideology. My elementary school teachers unhesitatingly taught us that the Japanese Empire had not been a colonial empire but a liberator of Asia, that Japanese technology had far surpassed that of the United States and that Japan had "simply happened" to lose the Second World War, and that China and South Korea would never surpass Japan economically. Rather than encouraging us to study the past critically, confront present realities, or imagine the future through the exercise of reason, they demanded that we believe in the myths of the nation. Looking back, I also recognize that the reason I did not become a believer in such narratives was ultimately not due to my own efforts, but because of the cultural capital I inherited from my family.

@harukaawake Japan has done a much better job with immigration compared to Europe. They have also stabilized their birth rate, something Italy, Germany, Korea, China, and many others have not been able to do. Japan is wonderful for civilized foreigners.

If criticism of one religion receives increasing legal protection while biblical preaching faces criminal prosecution, we should be asking hard questions about the future of free speech and religious liberty in America. How much more needs to happen before Christians wake up?
