Michael very much wanted to expand the form of music videos. And, one of the reasons the other directors, before me, left was that he didn't seem able to stop EXPANDING the video. What should have been maybe a 5 minute piece kept getting longer and longer as Michael explored new ideas... By the time I got involved, the idea was to do a 20-30 minute Music Short Film. I didn't disagree with the idea of that. I thought, if Michael's willing to give us 30 minutes... or 60... or 3 hours of him being brilliant, people will show up for it. The issue was that there just never seemed to be an end to to the "development" of the project. It was almost like Michael was afraid to pull the trigger... and put a risky creative experiment out there, in a world that was daily becoming more and more geared toward quick hits of experience. Meanwhile, I was deep into pre-production on DragonHeart at Universal, and developing 3 other projects under my studio deal, and at a certain point, DragonHeart began to take over and I had to basically go to Michael and ask him for his blessing to leave the project. He was great about it, on a purely human level... But also-- even though I had no contract and was doing all my development work on spec-- a few days after I left, my agent, Jay Moloney, called and said-- "Man, Michael must really like you!" "Why?", I asked-- Jay said-- "He just sent over a check for you for the work you did!" Then he told me the amount of the check. Needless to say, he must HAVE really liked me. (Actually I know this to be true because of what happened after John Landis pitched Michael HIS idea for what the video Black or White video should be... Heh... Another story... for another day...

@SeriousHarmony For every music/Lakers/sports clip.. I get too many negative videos that follow it before a good one comes back around. It’s just throwing stuff at us to see what sticks and I don’t like it.

@rafranzdavis Mine were doing that too. But I said this bc the algorithm is complete crap. For every Lakers/music clip I get, there’s 10 racist/race baiting videos that follow. It’s made it way easier to jump on here by turning that feature OFF.
