@obus_r Do you have anything to substantiate that GW was responsible for the NYT piece?

Yo I’m tryna be done w this but I didn’t realize groundwork went and TAPPED THE NEW YORK TIMES to write a FACTIONAL HIT PIECE that’s insane. I don’t know how I can still be shocked by anything. That’s putrid. Like a couple months ago, y’all found a line and crossed it

This is a great thread, and I would add that as much as people joke about "woke 1" I think frantic discourse full of thought terminating cliches and bad faith, where the angriest person wins, were the actual worst part of woke 1 and should be consigned to the dustbin of history
Sarah@Sarah_pdx

As the person who proposed the poll which came closest to passing: groundwork and SMC’s constant attempts to put the least nuanced, most idealized spin on AOC (and on polls for that matter!) is the biggest impediment to actually getting her endorsed. More than the DSA left.

@Slimeonhersnail in metro dc we have a requirement to either attend the meeting with debate or have been a member for more than 30 days so folks can’t just join and vote. it’s worked for the ~6 years we’ve had it!

Good faith question for 1m1v heads if anyone wants to bite: does this not necessarily require narrowing membership requirements or getting rid of the dues waiver or something? Or is there some other mechanism to prevent outside influence. Genuinely curious

If you're new to DSA, before you get involved with caucus drama, knock some doors. That SMC application can wait. MUG will do fine without you for a minute. Knock some doors, get involved with the work. We have a world to win.

@CEAraos We already have such a robust infrastructure for zoom, proxy's, etc, that I don't think anyone would be disenfranchised, everyone in the chapter knows the deal and would have some sort of avenue to vote even if they couldn't make it. Just speaking for Madison in this case!

@CEAraos I say this to say that I think different chapters are different and so it makes a lot of sense to me to have them do different stuff, if there are baseline standards for how to conduct such a poll!

There are 57 chapters with over 500 members, many of them are regional (i.e. span multiple counties). Those chapters would be hard pressed to find venues that can both: fit all of their members; and be accessible for all of their members.
Marcato@sFz_Marcato

There's a fetish in DSA for in person deliberation and I don't think people realize how unsustainable and materially difficult that is for chapters once they reach a certain size.

@sFz_Marcato And I've never been more sure than I am right now that online discourse is frequently unhelpful, reductive, and brings out the worst in people. DSA as a primarily irl space is wonderful and forces people to "touch grass" and be in community

@sFz_Marcato Additionally, I like that we have a low barrier for entry and participation. I think 1m1v would require significantly narrowing that to prevent outside interference (the dues waiver makes it super easy for anyone to become a member in 5 minutes!)

Still haven't seen an actual compelling argument against 1m1v. We would never accept a union or co-op's leadership circumvent the will of their members, why is DSA any different? Isn't this what we criticize the Democratic party for? I, for one, do not want to be Democrats.

@Slimeonhersnail Yeah I mean I certainly will and I hope everyone does participate to the fullest extent but I also think we’ve been stripped of a lot of agency here.

Maybe I’m more confused by this because Madison is so uncaucused, but didn’t the original resolution put the power in the NPC anyway? So is the real concern that NYC-DSA thinks that every chapter but theirs is controlled by ultras and despotic and will rig the referendum?
Combo 🦧@thiccgenius

The end result is the NPC gets to decide what happens and there’s no mechanism as a rank-and-file member to have any real say here. The outcome will be decided within caucus leadership groups.

Like I could see a version of this with mandatory 1-on-1s and involvement that makes a lot more sense than anyone who fills out the dues waiver having a say automatically without anyone in the chapter needing to know who they are.

@thiccgenius I feel like throwing up your hands about this plan if you don't like it is a bad idea. There are all sorts of ways you could push for the process now to be as democratic as it can be, if you have those concerns.

@thiccgenius There's already a plan for participation of at-large members IIRC, and members in less active chapters can get mass emailed to make them aware of the vote in case chapter leadership is asleep at the wheel. We could even have an at-large voting structure for those people

@thiccgenius Like I would be surprised if chapters inactive enough to not engage with this would be that much more likely to make sure their membership responded to an email poll, you know?

@thiccgenius I think the same exact question would definitely be helpful, and requiring detailed information about how the vote were tallied, minimum standards to ensure turnout in non 1m1v chapters, etc would go a long way. I think the results of this would be pretty representative.
