There are some Essendon players right now whose careers are literally hanging by a thread. Yes, the club needs better development, and I've been banging that drum for a long time. But there's also a large group of senior players who, quite simply, seem content just being AFL footballers. Well, guess what? That won't cut it for much longer! If you're not prepared to work your absolute ass off this off-season and do everything possible to improve, whether it's hiring a sprint coach, putting in extra gym sessions, refining your skills, or taking advantage of every resource available, you'll be out of the system before you know it. Leave no stone unturned! For too long we've had players who simply haven't cared enough or done enough to maximise their talent. The old saying, the harder you work, the luckier you become, has never rung truer. Some blokes might need to spend a little less time overseas this off-season and a little more time doing the hard work. Hahaha, I appreciate that, but I have every confidence in Andrew Welsh. This is exactly why he made the decision to move on from Brad Scott. The meandering acceptance of mediocrity was unacceptable, and he acted. Watch the turnaround over the next couple of years as the appointments the club makes start to take effect. The right people, the right standards and the right environment will make a massive difference.

An additional issue, given where the club is at, is that assistant coaches will think long and hard about whether adding the Bombers to their résumé right now is the best move for their CV. Not because they don't believe in what the club is building long term, but because if they're aiming to become a senior coach in the short term, they may feel it doesn't strengthen their prospects. That said, if you came in and were part of the club's resurrection, there would be no greater endorsement of your credentials. If Hird gets the job, I think he'll need to be very shrewd and think outside the box in some areas to assemble the strongest possible coaching team around him. Look for experienced coaches who still have a lot to give who may not have jobs right now within a an AFL program and younger hungry coaches with abillity. The longer the runway he's given, the better, not only for his coaching group, but also for attracting the right recruits. ❤️🖤👊 #godons #bringbackhird #essendonfc @essendonfc
