“Increasing [JobSeeker] by $550 a fortnight would not even get us to the OECD average” We currently have the lowest unemployment payment – by a long way.

Ahead of today's first hearings for the People's Commission into the Housing Crisis, hundreds of people told us they're skipping the doctor, meals and heating to cope with high housing costs. news.com.au/finance/real-e…

For those who don't remember, in 2020 people on JobSeeker had their payments lifted to the Henderson poverty line AND "mutual" obligations suspended for a large chunk of the year, with higher payments continuing through to 2021.

People on DSP & Newstart were MORE THAN 30% of suicides in 2019. We are a FRACTION of the population. Rates dropped in 2020. Every decision to leave us in poverty & subject folks to "mutual" obligations abuse is a decision that kills. SHAME @AlboMP @JEChalmers @AmandaRishworth

nobody is asking how this show of police force impacts victims. Nobody mentions how fucking terrifying it is for victims to hear cops crashing down the door and arresting a violent male who may or may not be released within hours or days or weeks. This PR stunt is so so harmful.

Imagine how good it would be if the ATO sent landlords’ maintenance claims on their tax returns to renters for approval. Like hey, did this actually happen? Of course not. Straight to jail. X

it is always embarrassing when a rich person appointed by universities for their rich people connections decides their status magically summons up subject matter expertise despite having no qualifications, publications, or research track record in the field.

Backbenchers who broke ranks last budget to raise the rate are no longer concerned about the rate being raised. More likely they copped it when they did last time and are too scared to do it again. theguardian.com/australia-news…

The announcement today is nothing more than a reheated National Housing and Homelessness Agreement from 17/18 — the same NHHA that the Productivity Commission trashed in a 2022 report. Any “additional” spending announced is likely to be indexation for wage costs.

The bare minimum the government can do is urgently stop suspending payments while they figure out what to do with (un)employment services. And they must listen to unemployed people. If you support these two priorities, please write to tony.burke.mp@aph.gov.au telling him why.

Welfare dependency isn’t real, it’s just a sanitised way of saying dole bludger that both the ALP and Liberals use to flog the poor for political gain. If social security is welfare dependency, then what are tax concessions for rich people? 🧵
Institute of Public Affairs@TheIPA

“The growing culture of welfare and dependency in Australia is alarming and our leaders need to start having an honest, grown-up conversation about it.” New IPA research shows Australians on welfare has jumped by 425,000 since pre-Covid and pre-NDIS levels #auspol

@DaveOnTheRange @Sarah_Alice_X @ArtistAffame 1. That’s not how poverty lines work 2. If you think poverty isn’t real in industrialised countries then you can’t really believe in homelessness either 3. Get fucked
