Jaco Kleynhans argues that the ANC’s handling of the Bozell dispute reflects a deliberate “balance of forces” strategy, warning that the US must quickly recognise and counter South Africa’s long-standing anti-Western foreign policy posture to avoid being strategically outmaneuvered.

The United States’ is resetting its relationship with Africa based on mutually beneficial partnerships rather than aid, dependency, and spreading divisive ideology.

The ANC is taking to the streets today to “defend” the “sovereignty” of South Africa. This policy position by Nick Checker is in fact a confirmation of the sovereignty of African countries. It points to a relationship moving away from dependency and aid toward mutually beneficial partnerships. This is a relationship of self-respect. South Africa should embrace this as the way to walk a future path with the USA, rather than a path of hostility. The ANC must free itself from a victim mentality and step forward with confidence into a mutually beneficial partnership. The march in the streets does exactly the opposite. It is a display of victimhood and ideological blindness. Solidarity will do everything possible to establish the new relationship with the USA, not in dependence, but with confidence, to the benefit of both countries.

The US is clearly committed to a more sustainable, honorable relationship with the African continent in general, but particularly with African countries that choose to look to the future rather than dwelling on the past and the constant recycling of outdated disputes. This is good news. Unfortunately, the South African government has not proven itself to be a reliable partner in recent times. We hope this can change soon.

Hulle delf dieper in hoe dit Suid-Afrika sowel as Solidariteit-lede regstreeks beïnvloed. Is daar ʼn moontlike ontknoping waarmee almal tevrede sal wees of is dít ʼn onwaarskynlike vooruitsig?
